« on: March 15, 2014, 11:21:36 PM »
hey all....need help.
i have a 98 Cherokee 5.9L, i bought it with the 242 t case in it, but it don't work in 4 low....so i got a free 231 that works, it shifts and works. so we take out the 242 and had to change one sensor and we put it in, well the shifting rod is to big, no problem we can get a shorter one. but here is the ?, with the 231 in and bolted up and everything, we cant seem to move the t case lever.....??????????????? tried everything and yet it shifted before we put it in the Jeep. all the splines are the same. and ideas out there ?

Did someone else swap the NP242? 5.9 Zjs came with the NP249 AWD t-case from factory.

The shift gate in the floor of the ZJ is setup for a 3 position t-case(247, AWD(high), N and 4wd low.

The 231 has 4 positions, 2wd, 4wd(high), n and 4L.

The 242 has 5 positions 2wd, AWD, 4HI, N and 4l.

I've toasted two 242 in my ZJ as  I've not been able to get the linkage setup properly. It goes into 4L and and wheels ok and then suddenly one day its 2L.

I put in a 231 but used the linkages from a 231, I think the shift tab bolted onto the t-case is a different length. Also might be pointed in different direction. Cann't remember, its been a while.

Send me a cell number and I'll snap a pic of my np231 setup and text it to you.

Here is a writeup I did that might help as well.

Search google, NAGCA and Mallcrawlin for more info.

Did the 242 case in my 98 5.2 and it works great. Used the 242 shift tab and made a new linkage. Cut and welded it at 13.25" and seems to be juuuust right.
Getting grumpier every day.
99 XJ - It's got sum stuff ,Noel free stuff..
98 ZJ - It's just ugly, but bigger than your Rubi
