Towing
« on: March 29, 2014, 12:14:47 PM »
Ok here is a question that maybe someone has an answer too I have a trailer 25 foot with a hitch on the rear ... Can you legally hook a car hauler loaded up behind this travel trailer ? I know when I was in Bc this was strictly illegal but I am not sure about Alberta - I've seen it done long ago but how about 2014 ? Thanks guys

It's legal in Alberta so long as:

- The first trailer is a fifth wheel
- The first trailer has two or more axles
- The first trailer is the longer trailer
- The hitch for the second trailer needs to be attached to the frame of the first
- Whole setup can't exceed 20m (from front of the truck to back of the second trailer)

If you thinking of doing what I think you are (towing a ZJ on a car hauler behind a travel trailer), be careful and have the trailer and ZJ weighed together. My ZJ with mods is sitting at probably 5500lbs and the whole towed assembly would be sitting closer to 7500lbs once on the trailer. With the length restriction, you're looking at probably a maximum length of 16' for the car hauler (less depending on the truck length).

The folks who run the weigh scales would be the ones who would know exactly, since they'd be the ones who would be seeing your setup a lot.

Pretty sure there was a weight limit on the second trailer, 3500#?

Trailers over 3500# have to have their own brakes. Not sure how you would setup the brakes to work on a second trailer. Most brake controllers can only handle two axles. Even the higher end one only do 3.

You also need to consider the tow vehicles GCWR.

Tow vehicle is f350 sd diesel - but seems little bit complicated and pain in the arse - I was hoping to only have to use one of the diesels I own and make one trip with less trucks - looks like one ford hauling the trailer and the other hauling my jeep good thing my woman can drive and haul trailers as well :-) thanks clay

and trailers in BC   over 1000 lbs need brakes so not sure how that works   they are way stricter there   the comments  above re  the first towed vehicle has to be a 5th wheel etc   is correct.    I learned this after I towed my off road car with  a utility trailer behind that to haul firewood    oooops

I had built a trailer specifically for hauling my Jeep and RV at the same time. Worked well for random camping but was heavy(18,000#) and too big for many campgrounds(30""+).  Ended up selling it and going to a two vehicle system as well.
