Any ideas on what to do with my '96 Cherokee...?
« on: August 14, 2014, 01:48:46 PM »
I have a '96 and a '94 XJ, and a 2013 Rubicon now.  Both XJs are original to my family, so I know them well.  I brought the '94 back from Vancouver Island a couple of years ago because my gf needed a vehicle and my father wasn't driving it anymore (it was just sitting in a garage).  Then I bought the '13 Rubicon, and took the '96 out to the island to use whenever I was there.  Dad has since passed away, and now I have all 3 in Calgary.  I don't drive the '96 anymore, but it still works just fine.

The '96 has over 380,000 km on it, still on the original clutch, and everything is mechanically fine.  I drove it from the island back to Calgary in January with no issues at all.  The issues with it though, are: rust, doors not working properly, the driver's seat wobbles (something is broken underneath), and the hood release is broken, so I have the hood always cracked open.  It's got lots of tread left on the DuraTracs though.

So I'm considering just keeping it as a parts car for the '94 (which is in nearly perfect condition), or maybe get rid of it.  I could build it up as a trail rig, but I'd rather spend the money on the Rubicon, or some other priorities, so that probably wouldn't happen for many years.

Any thoughts?

Well you aren't going to get a ton for a 96 with nearly 400K on it... if you have the room why not part it out... keep the things that are good on it so you can use them on the '94 or sell them off and buy some parts for the Rubi.

All great suggestions...  :-\

Maybe I could cage it and rat rod it, lower it and put hydraulics in it... or not...
Seriously though, if I were to sell it, how much do you guys think I could get for it?  I was thinking around $1500, and since the tires alone are worth nearly $1000, that means the rest of it isn't worth much - and as we all know if I need a new starter or water pump or anything (for the other cherokee), that could be a few hundred dollars just for the one part.  That's why I'm thinking of keeping it.  Unless, of course, it might be worth more.

The downside though is that once I take out a critical part, now I've got an immobile vehicle sitting around, and how often would I be taking parts off of it (not that often).  So would I get more parting out the whole thing, or just selling it as is?  Thoughts?

No idea what it might be worth as a whole but as Fug suggested is parting it out an option?  Bit of work but you would probably get more money out of it.

Yeah, maybe I'll part it out, but it'll have to wait until I build my garage.  That may happen in the fall, but more likely in the spring.

As you can tell, Billy loves the xjs and thinks that they are a piece of priceless engineering.
if we were smart with our money we wouldn't own Jeeps.
