ZJ 242 Transfer case

Want a 242 to replace a 249 in my 96 ZJ. Prefer 96-98 ZJ case but will look at others. Premium paid for low KM units.  Probly gonna need the rear shaft as mine is an ISY. Shift bezel wanted as well.

Do you have the V8 or 4.0 in your ZJ?

a 231 is a better option compared to the 242 those clutch packs in them are garbage

NP242 doesn't have clutch packs.

Go do some some Google searches and educate yourself on the difference between the two units.

it's a V8 that my wife drives daily. I want the 242, preferable with the internal slip so I don't have to swap driveshafts. If I was going to off road it, I would go with the 231 and a SYE.

Not sure if you know or not but the 242 never came behind a V8.  Only with the 4.0 and it has a different input shaft.  To make it work in your V8 you will have to swap the input shaft from your 249 into the 242.  A 242 from an XJ or ZJ will.work but there was a difference in years so do some research on it

if the ZJ is a 96 V8 then a 242 from a I6 ZJ should bolt up as the inputs are the same length

Yes, I am aware of which t.case comes behind which engine in which jeep. Not my first rodeo, plus I've done a fair bit of research. Some inputs you do need to swap out, some you don't. Not really an issue, easy to do. I'm more concerned about condition and the rear output. I'd rather have an internal slip yoke. Plus I'm being overly picky as i'm not in a rush to do this job. The jeep only has 130kms on it and the 249 doesn't have any issues, yet.

I have a couple of 242s laying around.  One is still in a 96 (I think) zj I  not sure of output though and it has 3xx,xxx km's.
Other one is out of an xj. 2xx,xxx km's on it if I remember right.  90% sure it has the internal slip.

$250 gets you either one. Another $50 for the interior bits out of the zj.
