np242 guts inside 249 case?
« on: August 25, 2015, 06:42:04 PM »
Hey guys really looking for some help here I've looked everywhere talked to several people and can't find the right answer i have a 93 zj with a 249 t case but its set up like a 242 with 2wd,part time and full time as well as 4low. I have searched and can't find anything on this modification. I need to replace the chain but am unsure of what parts i will need for this hybrid t case. I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction. Thanks so much guys!!!

i find it hard to believe that you didn't run across this thread.

have you opened up the transfer case yet? or is it still in your jeep. why do you 'assume' the chain is bad.  why do you want to change it.

i'll simplify it for you. you need a chain for a 242....... you can't find that info anywhere because the chain is part of the 242 transfercase.... which is what you have.

If I recall its a 242 front case with a 249 back case... All 242 internals. I may be wrong but I just did this swap last year. I optted to just swapping the 249 input shaft into the 242 case.

Awesome guys thanks for the replies i will be changing it out this weekend amd usong that write up but am unsure of the link count on the chain apparantly there is a 36 and 49 and two widths 1 " and 1.25". I know i could just pull it apart and check but I'd like to have the chain on hand when i start.

I thought the tag was on the rear half?

Yeah the case-half swap is to overcome the input gear cut difference between early and late cases... but it wouldn't end up with a 249-tagged case with 242 guts. Maybe OP's had a 242 that was swapped to a 249 and it's still got the 249 bezel?

It indeed was a 242 chain in that bad boy wasn't hard at all to tear it apart but the old chain was so loose that it wore a groove a groove in the case. New one is nice and tight and 4wd lives again!
