Dom,

I could supply you with a list of cheap, readily available, junkyard parts to set up a nice 12-15psi turbo kit on your XJ if you wanted to go that route.

Shouldn't cost you any more than $2000.

You just let me know when you're ready.

;)

Just a quick question, what would you use for fuel management? :?

Depends on how low-buck you were going to go.
You could likely get away with using a high volume fuel pump and a decent FMU, as long as you were careful while tuning. IMHO, a good wideband 02 sensor is well worth the insurance it gives you on not leaning out.

As far as turbo's go. For a 4.0L that you want making low end power, look for a turbo off a Grand National/Regal-X/anything with a 3.8L-ish V6. Problem is, as you can guess, these are tough to find.
If you're going to build a little cheaper, look for a Holset off a later 90's Dodge Cummins Diesel (hx-40, hx-45, hx-50). It'll be a little bigger than ideal for a 4.0L, but with a good tuning setup and low boost, it should work mighty fine. Would work excellent on a 4.7L stroker though.
Intercoolers are easy, just go to the yard and get the thickest one you can find and pay a rad shop to cut it down to fit.
I'd have to look into what injectors could be used, as I'm not sure of the size/draw of the stock 4.0L injectors.
What you'd end up buying for a setup like this (if you kept it simple and low boost) is fuel delivery, ignition, and tubing. As far as tubing goes, it's easier than ever with the good quality silicone elbows now readily available. You no longer have to have your entire turbo system plumbing mandrel bent from hard line, now you can pretty much just do the whole thing with straight pipe and silicone elbows.
If anyone's seriously interested in doing this, let me know. I know of a few places that have shitloads of information on turbocharging non-stock applications and would enjoy helping with some of the research required to hook something like this up.

Take care,
Kris

Hey thanx Kris.
I have a couple of k26 turbos off of an audi 5000 it looks to be a little bigger than a t3 from a caravan/lebaron. Only bad thing is no internal wastegate.  I have an external wastegate from turbonetics (I think) but it did not have the right springs (I think broken) and I was getting tons of boost creep on my 1.6 honda, jeep has bigger engine.
do you think that one of these turbos would be suffecient? Jeep is only 2.5 not 4.0l.  or maybe a t3, with internal wastegate.
I dont wont crazy boost but when you have the areodynamics of a toaster oven it really hinders the ability of my 2.5.  I love my jeep and will never trade it in for anything.
any info would be awesome.
THANX Mike

Hey Mike,
IMHO, the K26 turbo's you've got are too small for your application. Sure, you could make them work, but they're relatively sought-after by import guys, so you might be better off selling them and picking up somethig more suitable.
As far as a "T3" goes, that's about a good a desription as describing a 1967 Corvette as "a red car". There are countless different configurations of the "T3".

I'd suggest looking for a TB03 from an '85-'86 T-Bird, however, here's the rub:
You're more likely to find a turbo off a T-Bird with an automatic transmission than one with a manual tranny. Now, if memory serves, the turbo they used on the automatic cars was an oil cooled unit (better than water cooled), but only came in a 45 trim, which is likely going to be a little small for your 2.5L. The manual transmission cars came with a 60 trim, but are water cooled. Given the choice between the two (and keeping things as cheap as possible) I'd go with the water cooled turbo in a 60 trim.
If you're going to spend a little money, I'd keep an eye out on the DSM forums for a cheap Big Evo III or Green that some of those guys run. Even a nice 20G would work well. I've seen several for sale from time to time as the DSM guys buy the 20G, then realize that they've gotta rev their 2.0L engines to 5000RPM before they'll spin that big son-of-a-bitchin turbo.

The other thing you're going to want to figure in is the added costs of fuel. Off the top of my head, I can't remember what the compression on the 2.5L is, but I'm betting that even with moderate amounts of boost and a good intercooler, you're going to want to stick to 92 octane.

Take care,
Kris

Thanx so much kris.

Ill keep you posted.  Hopefully i can get a hold of you if any more questions arise.
