2010 JK, Blown Engine - Options

Hi folks - long story short - I have a 2010 JK UNLTD with about 95K on the odometer. Blown engine, no warranty. I would love some insights on options - buy new chrysler engine, rebuilt or wait for a deal on a used? Not in a hurry and if anyone has recommendation for a great Calgary mechanic it would be greatly appreciated. Cheers!

Well... You could take those lemons and make lemonade; sounds like a perfect opportunity for a hemi swap!

Low-ish mileage used engines are around. We have sourced very low mileage hemi swap 3.8L as well, some with less then 10,000kms. Why did your engine blow? Typically we see them hydro-locked.

hemi swaps a waste of time.  do an LS swap.  www.rpmextreme.com is a great place to start.  prices will make you cringe. 

for what its worth a used 3.8 i found locally was 3k.  had 50km on it.  it was for sale for a day. i had been looking for months. they don't last long; high demand.  there are alot of options to ship one up from the US. you'll be lookin 5k give or take. 

there is no cheap alternative. 


however, i do think there were a few on kijiji though. one for 2k and a higher mileage one for 900$ though.

been there. buying a motor for a JK sucks.

Hi guys - thanks for the options. Engine ran out of oil after (unfortunately) letting the kids run too many kms on it over the Summer and I thought an oil change had been done. Weird thing is when it seized, the kms were not that far above suggested oil change range. Lot's of sleepless nights wondering what could have been... :-\

On a US forum, most suggestions were for a rebuild as used were tough to come by with no warranty/history. I'd appreciate any color here on best options for those. While I'm doing this I'd love to get more power but I don;t really understand the compatibility ramifications.

Re: mini van engine - someone told me these motors are interchangeable if I don't care what model it came from, or the resale implications. I'd like to know more, but would probably pay a bit more for a Jeep engine. If I'm paying 30-50% less that's another story!

Only way the engine could have seized is if someone let the oil get too low, either from consumption(burning) or an external leak. Simply going a bit too long on an oil change wouldn't cause the engine to fail unless you were WAY(years) over the limit.

Other things that could have happened is it was abused-sustained high RPM or a cooling system failure leading to overheat.  Are you sure its seized and not a bad starter or something?

Are the kids going to change the engine themselves or are they paying to have a shop do it? If you are doing yourselves then getting a used engine is the cheapest option. I don't think a minivan motor will have any less power since you'll reuse your intake, exhaust and computer programming. Its possible the cam is a bit different but I doubt it would make much difference.  If a shop is doing it then you should consult with them as they will have to warranty it should something go wrong and often they will only deal with certain wreckers or rebuilders.

Hi folks - reviving this topic.

I have 3 options and hoping to get some advice

1. Sell my JK with the blown engine. NO idea how much that would be worth? Low kms for a 2010 95,000 kms. Fully loaded - original owner, white with tan tops. Don't want to just throw it on Kijiji and deal with the tire kickers...
2. Install a quality rebuild and sell it. Is it worth the hassle - will there be any upside over selling it without the rebuild?
3. Install a quality rebuild and drive this baby into the ground!

If option 2 or three - any recommendations to have it done in Calgary?

There is the option for a used one. Some come with limited warranties too.
