Sticky Situation Need Advice ASAP…..

Well I have a very sticky situation on my hands right now and would appreciate any help or ideas.

I'm pulling my engine, and today since I had the day off work, I decided to pull the dam thing, since it's been ready to be pulled for about 2 week now.  I have been waiting for a friend to come lend me a hand, but well he's been a no show now a couple of times (Nice friend eh), so I said to hell with him and decided to do it my self.. (Not a good idea for a 1st timer)

Well any ways, I'm pulling the engine, transmission & transfer case in one shot (or so I thought).  So I hooked up the 2 ton engine hoist, and begun to lift the works, that’s when it all went down hill.

The weight of the transfer case & Transmission, once it left the jack holding it up tipped the works down (The hook on the hoist slipped on the chain attached to the engine and slid all the way to the front of the engine) causing the T-Case and transmission to touch the ground and the engine to stuck up in the air. I shredded my oil pan, filter and I'm sure a few other things when it tipped and caught the frame where the motor mounts attach to.

I have been able to re-place the jack under the transmission, and one on the transfer case, and jack it up again.  And have some what re seated the engine, back on the mounts as best I can by myself.

Would a engine sling help me out any, to help lever the load and keep the hook from slipping?   will I still be doomed with the t-case and tranny slipping down as I lift it..

or should I just crawl under the jeep and Unbolt the transmission and lower the t-case and transmission and then lift the engine out, like I probably should have in the 1st place  .?

or option 3 go across the street and sweet talk the mechanic who works for Cochrane dodge and see if he can lend a hand and some pointers to this 1st time engine puller

Is your grill and everything out?

If it is, pulling the motor and tranny together wont be bad, but pulling all three is going to be a SOB no matter what.

I have never even treid, so cant say if its impossible or not.

We always do, tranny and t-case together, or motor and tranny, never all three  :D  :D

Kudos for tryin though

Pull the t-case to make your life easier.

And since you nearly have it out, and can get good downward angle meaning good access to tranny bolts, it wouldnt hurt to pull that too.

Good luck, and be carefull.

Well I got it all sorted out, when I went to the parts store to grab a engine sling and explained it to the owner of the shop.  He told me thats what should happen, or you will not be able to pull them out if it's all level.  If I had an extra set of hands, to operater the jack under the jeep, I'm sure pulling all 3 would be fairly easy.

The grill was removed and I also had the fenders off (Since I'm planning on Flat fendering the jeep).  Which made the whole thing much easier, another pair of hands would have been nice, but I managed by myself.

Now that I look back, it's not the smartest idea to pull all 3. it would have been much easier & SAFER to do as bnine has said in his above post!!!

Next time I do anything like this I will follow bnines advice   , the t-case will be dropped, and the engine and transmission will be lifted out.  Just to make life easier.

But all 3 together is doable with the grill off, and is also nice if the fenders are off, expecialy if your doing it your self, since when pulling the works it likes to spin side ways.  and I'm sure it would have damaged the fenders if they were on.

I've pulled all three together on my XJ twice. I have a tilt bar that allows me to change the angle of the drivetrain as it comes out.  Makes life much easier. You are welcome to borrow it if needed. Never pulled the grill, just the rad for the extra rom but the A/C condensor stayed.
