jeep cherokee 4.0 into a YJ?
« on: July 02, 2007, 12:27:32 AM »
I am getting a new engine.
I found a 95 Cherokee engine 4.0l
I was wondering if the engines in
cherokees and Yj's were the same so
that it will be a straight up engine swap.
I don't really wanna be doing any fabs
to get the parts to mount on right.
My yj is a 91 so has Fuel injection.

thx
Dave

The 95 will have an HO engine, different then the older AMC/Renix sytem.  Different head, electronics and wiring. Not a straight swap but its been done.

Is your '91 a HO or non HO engine? I think '91 or '92 was the change over year.

Easiset way I can think of to tell is does it say 4.0 HO on the back or the HOs have a temp sensor in the t-stat housing, the renix systems have them in the rad.

'91 was the year the YJ got the HO.

the 1991 yj has the high output. the temp gauge sensor is on the head on the drivers side at the back. i put a 1997 tj engine in my 1992 yj and the only problems i had was the different location for the temp gauge sensor and the pilot bearing had a different inside and outside diameter.
because you have a 1991 HO and you are putting in a 1995 HO you may have no issues. valve cover to oil pan, the 4.0L is pretty much identical through the years. whats wrong with your 1991 4.0L? if you still have it, id gladly take the cylinder head from you. did you put a rod through the block like i did on mine?
lol;)

ya the rings are gone, a couple of valves are bent and ya so on and so
forth.  I am pretty sure the guy told me that i needed to bring in my engine for a core exhange but hey if I don't i will glady let you know.
Ya i just want as little probs as possible.

Thx

The XJ will have a temp sensor in the t-stat housing for turning on the electric fan. The guage sensor is at the back. If the YJ doesn't use an electric fan the sensor in the t-stat housing can be ignored.

good to know clay. the 4.0L is pretty much the same through all the jeeps, but its the little things between each different model that get me. i drive a YJ so i got those  figured out.
