tried taking the drivetrain out of a late model v8 zj and putting it in an 88 xj? I know you can't use the rear axle without a tonne of mods but is the rest feasable? would like it to be carburated for ease of use....

V8 were never offered in XJs so it would all be custom. There are a few XJs with V8s around, I saw one with a 350. Wasn't too bad for room lengthwise as a V8 is shorter than the inline 6. But all the AC stuff and wiring that was on the fenders had to go.

I would retain the FI. Carbs suck. A stock 4.0 with its factory FI intact would be better than a stock 5.2 with a carb, especially off-road.

Front ends are exactly the same but gear ratios might be different. The rear end may or may not be an upgrade depending on wether or not the XJ has a D35 or 8.25.

Expalin what you want to do(include model years and tranny types) and we can help you be better.

All in all in would be 80% custom fabbing, nothing would "bolt in" excpet the front end.

I have a stock 88xj, standard trans the usually 4.0 inline 6. would want 4 to 5 inches of lift, nothing to retarded. I just want an all around weekend truck to go fishing, hunting and camping with. Will probaly throw a winch and some heavier bumpers, nothing too exotic.... would like the serviceability of the v8 over the six thats all. Way more used to v8's and carbs than 6's and FI

The inline 6 is an excellent motor, especially for wheeling, lots of low end torque. However the manual trannys in that year are crap.

How good are you at fabrricating? Putting a V8 into an XJ takes a lot of fabbing. Unless you like fabbing and REALLY want a V8 I'd look around for a V8 Grand Cherokee.

BTW carbs suck! Step into the new milenia and go FI!

So I stay with the 6 and get it rebuilt, who in town is worth their salt at machining these things. I have no probs rebuilding it myself, just need a trustworthy machine shop to do the machining. The FI is ok, just like the tuneability of a carb. spent way more time playing with carbs than FI. Carbs don't need an ecm, and 9 times out of 10 can be fixed enough to get you home instead of a tow with FI if something goes haywire. Lets admit it Jeeps are not know for their reliability in the wiring dept!

Firebolt does all the rebuilding and machining I believe
