is owning modded jeep even worth it anymore?
« on: September 10, 2007, 06:52:41 PM »
just read an article in the herald about how quiet Indian graves was this summer because of limitations of vehicle size and number of campers.  I also read that Maclean might be next.  And since we have already lost all the trails that are any fun in Waiparous, where else is there to go?  I really dont want to go to California 2 times a year to go offroading.  I LOVE my jeep, LOVE camping and offroading, but if they keep making all these changes to the rules, then I have to wonder if the past 5 years of my time making an offroad jeep was in vain.....
build 'em, break 'em,
love 'em, leave 'em
same thing

The short answer is yes.

For the long answer (which is also Yes). come along on a run or come to a meeting sometime. The meetings are on the third wednesday of the month, details in the events section.
I used to have an open mind but my brains kept falling out.

“RANT”

The longer answer.

The off road community will continue to loose trails and areas so long as there are individuals out there abusing the areas we use. I know it is not the users of this forum that need to hear this but it is the readers of this forum that can spread the message to those that do need to hear it.  I don’t know if we can stop the trend but we can try.

How?

1.
Respect the back country and try to educate others to follow the philosophy of “Tread Lightly”. http://www.treadlightly.org/. If you have not been to this web site then go to it read it and tell others.

2.
Lead by example and participate in as many trail projects as possible. If we want to maintain and possibly expand the trails we have available then it will take an enormous amount of hard work. There is a bridge project this weekend and a fencing project next weekend. They need volunteers get involved. We will never convince the decision makers with the power over our trails to stop taking them away and give us more trails if we don’t work very hard at it.  Members of the CJA working with other local clubs will likely have at least 2-3 more major trail projects this winter. I am going out this weekend but can't next weekend. It would be great if a few could step up and help with that project.

I know that lots of the club members and forum users have been out working on projects this year. Thanks for the effort. However, I am afraid if we want to have an impact it will take even more effort and for several years.  That’s just the way I see it.

Thanks for giving me an excuse to rant. There are no guaranties but if you we don’t make an effort then we know what will happen to our trail system.

Don't excuse your rant mon ami... It's all good that you care.

We can't just sit back any more and say " I'll go wheel somehwere else if the government closes an area" ... NEXT TIME YOU SEE AN IDIOT OUT THERE .. DO SOMETHING AND EDUCATE THEM!!!!

and Yes it's worth keeping... I love wheeling and I'll find a way to keep it going (we all can find a way) !!!

Cheers!

I love wheeling in BC. It'a always nice to experience new terrain.

We should go meet you in your neck of the wood in BC for a trail ride may be next summer.

It would be fun  :D .... Just an idea...

i disagree.
We the 4x4 community have given, given, given...

NOW is the time for SRD to HELP us out. They do nothing to implement rules, enforce rules, etc. SRD is the problem. When BLACKWOOD and MORTON succeed at shutting all 4x4's out of Alberta will they wake up to the harsh reality that the 4x4 community is the only community of users that ever did anything to maintain structure in the wilderness.
The ATV community (100,000 strong) will now glaringly be in the public eye. The bike community does indeed take care of its own singletrack trails but this is not within the public eye, so it does go unnoticed.

SRD...GET INVOLVED.

This has been edited to tone down what i really feel about Morton, Blackwood and SRD.

I too am frustrated with a lack of progress.

Tom
I do agree with you. This last year has been horrible for closure of trails and loss of places for trucks/jeeps to get off road. It is extremely frustrating. However, if  we quit trying to improve trails and educate those that abuse the trails then we have lost the battle.

As I have said in previous threads I would support licensing and off road permits for the OHV community.  It is the best way to ration the finite resource of motorized access to our back country. I believe you have previously agreed with the idea of licensing and permits. If we could get SRD and Morton on side with that kind of a format we might make some headway.  How do we convince those in government with the power to change things to take that kind of a step?  For now I don’t know. However, working on trail projects and education helps to strengthen the communication and relationships between the local clubs and SRD. That level of communication is one avenue to deliver the message.

Yes we need a win soon everyone is very frustrated. If the frustration level forces the volunteers to stop then we are dead in the water with no voice.

Blair,
i am not saying we should stop doing proactive things, i am just including SRD in the final picture. If Maclean closes to 4x's, where next?

Yes SRD needs to give the trucks / jeeps a win. In the end it is the Minister in charge of SRD (Mr. Morton) with all the power over our trails. Convincing those at the top of SRD needs to be a big part of  our focus.

If they close McLean then you may find me at the local quad store. OR? Have you considered opening TOM’S Single Track Bike School, for old jeep owners who never owned a motorcycle? I might consider being your first client.

For now I am hopeful about keeping and regaining some jeep trails. I am going to keep up a strong fight through the winter with several trail projects. The OHV community needs to continue to demonstrate that we will keep up the trials we have if we are going to make progress to get any of the ones we lost back. I will be at a multi club trail project meeting tonight to talk about this winters projects including the bridges on Meadow Creek Trail that need repair/ replacement.

The Mclean rumors are for now just rumors and we need to keep working against the tide of closures.

Do you have any new info about the Province wide committee that was to review back country use. Did we get a new rep. to fill in on that committee?  Please pass along any info you have.

Thanks,
Blair

Have you ever talked to the bike shops and other 4x4 web sites????? Maybe join forces ..........................   modern motors..... national 4x4......they are going to be screwed... they'll contribute...   get the whole AREA together ....everyone.     Make a public spectical of this. Yeah the 30 person picket got some attention but comon........    they changed nothing. 2000 people .........   that'll be something.  Maybe organize a 4x4 show that all of alberta will want to see.   then do a parade after the show and all take a verbal dump at city hall.

I dont live there anymore but I'll make the trip if there is a chance of a huge gathering.

You guys ...... love the work you do for the community, but they are not getting the point.

If they can get together 5000 people for a gay parade ..... you can get alot more for your cause
