Going out right now to install the RE H & T SYE on my Cherokee. I've read all that I can read on the net to make it as easy as possible. I Just get a little nervous when it comes to cutting stuff... :shock:  :shock:  :shock: The only real concern I have is breaking the tap in the shaft. I'll post up when I get it done.  :wink:

Why? I've never read a bad thing about them...

So, I screwed up a tiny bit. Everything went well, but when I drilled the hole in the shaft (I center punched it perfectly), the bit slipped a little and now the hole isn't perfectly centered.  It all went together fine, but I'm concerned it may cause a bit of vibration. Anybody have some first hand input? I don't have the DS yet, so I can't test it.

Its not the strongest solution and u can't get it centered perfectly just as you said. What if the threads get stripped out later? Vibrations possibly...

If u dont want to take the case apart to put a good beefy sye kit in then i guess the tap kit is next best...

Let us know if u get any vibes because bolt is off center. Its seems like a small thing that wouldnt make a difference but u never know..

I wanted to install a h/n/t on my 98 before it went away.  I did a lot of research on the subject to find out the best answers before I even started.

1.  because the flange is centered on the shaft by the splines, not the bolt, it will not vibrate.  having the bolt a little off center will not hurt anything

2.  check the bolt regularly, because it seems no matter how much loc-tite you use, it will loosen off

3.  I see by the fact that that is a 242 t-case, your ONLY option is a hack'n'tap.  Others will argue that you can get a kit from Tom Woods complete with drive shaft, but essentially it is a hack'n'tap kit that someone has drilled the hole for you in the shaft.  why do you think he wants your old shaft back??.

4.  For a cheaper solution to a custom driveshaft, you can buy the flange style adapter from NAPA and use a front cv style shaft from another xj.

I am not here to start an argument, so those that do not believe me can go to www.NAXJA.org and type sye or hack'n'tap into the search bar and see what you will get.  The only variation I have seen is the homebrew one on gojeep.com

I have done one of these as well and it was slightly of center.  Never had a problem.  As wrenchhead said the flange is centered by the splines, who cares if the bolt is slightly off.  Clean up the bolt real well with brake clean and the hole in the shaft.  Then get some locktite primer and prime the hole and the bolt.  Then use some red locktite.  Now hope you never have to remove it.

Does anyone think that drive shaft/HnT mod would work in a YJ 4"lift? Can you buy the cheap SYE for a 231? Just so I can get the transfer case back up where it belongs. I know how to fabricate and weld, just never done a driveshaft before....... but I watch powerblock all the time

I think there are a lot of hack and tap np231 kits. I remeber seeing a lot on ebay. not sure if they are on there anymore. If you do end up doing it... let me know, I'll provide the beer.

Hay a buddy and I did a SYE kit and we spun the shaft in a lath to drill the hole. After about a month he got annoyed with having to titon the nut we got a grad 8 stud threaded it in and then migged it solid and the used a stoffer nut on the stud and that never baked off. You could use red lock-tite instead of migging the stud.

I used red locktite on the bolt so we'll see how that goes. Thanks for the info and I'll keep it in mind if i have problems. :wink:
