Rear leaf replacement in 1992 XJ
« on: May 02, 2008, 06:24:48 PM »
I'm just wondering if it's as difficult as i've heard to replace the leafs in the back of a Cherokee?  If it's going to be that hard, i'm just going to get my mechanic to do it.  Any info on this dilemma would be appreciated.

It's pretty strsight forward to do. Just don't remove the top leaf spring...The bolt at the front of each top spring is a pain in the arse. There's a welded nut on the inside of the frame and most times you'll either snap the bolt, or break the welds on that nut. Then you have to start cuttin the floor to get access to it.

My suggestion is to take the leaf spring packs apart and replace the other springs. I've done it many times.

I agree the front leaf bolt at the frame can be NO fun...blast all the bolts and bushings with PB blaster for a few days before and use some heat if it gives you any grief. Otherwise get ready to start cuttin!   :o

If you don't feel comfortable changing them yourself their are several guys on this sight that do side work from home that have the plasma cutters and welders for the worst case scenario. I had to cut the springs out.
Why does your Jeep say Toyota on it?
