XJ clunk/jerk when releasing brake from full stop
« on: January 17, 2009, 12:51:53 PM »
My XJ seems to have developed a problem when letting go of the brakes from a complete stop.  It clunks/jerks.  Seems to happen only when the brakes are applied to slow down moderate to high pressure when pushing on the peddle.  When I slow down slowly, it doesn't happen.  Noise seems to be coming from the rear.

I'm going to take the drums off this afternoon and readjust the brakes, I think they rears are set too tight as in the parkade at work I noticed they seem to lock up before the fronts sometimes which is weird because it doesn't do it all the time, in snow...etc.  It's almost as if the rear drums are sticking when I use the brakes hard and they let go only when the vehicle starts moving again, causing the jerk/clunk.

Anyone ever run into this problem?

Check for axle shaft oil leaks or a leaking rear wheel brake cylinder. Either can contaminate the lining on the shoes and cause grabbing/sticking when braking.

After inspecting the rear brakes, everything looks normal.  We did notice some play in the drive line though and I think it may be what's causing the issue.  In 4-high coming to a stop, the clunk doesn't happen.  Could my rear spider gear be worn?

Check out this video (rear axle up in the air, tranny in neutral, this is the play we noticed... is this normal or is this the problem?   :-\

Searched the net, and the issue sounds a lot like "stop-bump" that affects WJ's.  Any ideas??

One of my cherokee's does this as well.

I replaced axle seals/bearings/brakes when got it.

I found this and now I just try to ignore it.

Look at the posting from may 2000.

I can't view it, it wants me to log in.  I assume it's the stop-bump issue?  I think it might be my slip-yoke, I have to check my t-case fluid level after work.  :(

The play you showed in the video is normal.

Are your u-joints good? U-bolts tight?

Front control arm bushings are common on those.

Have someone stop and start while you watch the front axle.

Rolling back cycling the brake pics out pretty fast as well.
