Is it the exact same tranny and TC from the same model year?  I seem to remember a couple of guys on JF having issues and having to change the Transmission Control Module, I think.

Did you fill it with more fluid, and then run it through all gears, and THEN check the fluid again?

Sounds to me like lots of pressure at the beginning as the fluid is cold, but as it heats, less pressure and less movement in each gear.  If you start it up again and it does the same thing....bet that is the issue.

Whats it like in 4low? Sounds like its starting off in 3rd gear or drive......

Still not sure what you are working on.... I'm guessing a ZJ cause its got a 42re, but engine size and year would help....

Did you get a new torque converter or reuse the old one?

Okay, that was interesting.  I went out and put it into 4 low and it moved perfectly in forward and reverse, it definitely has 1st gear.  Then I changed something, either the gear selector or the 4wd selector and it went away, now it's back the way it was, I don't have first and I barely have reverse.  Now this is a stupid question, the transfer case is what is responsible for the 4wd/2wd selection right?  So could this mean that my transfer case is shot?

My Jeep is a 4.0L in-line 6, yes it's a ZJ.  1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee.  The new transmission came with a new torque converter.

It`s from a 1993, and mine is a 1996.

No I didn`t, I will go re-check the transmission fluid.

The TC is responsible for switching 2wd and 4wd, I believe that you have either the 231 or the 242 if you have a 2wd option.  If you only ahve 4hi n and 4lo you have the 249.

Did you check the TC linkage, that might cause these problems.

With the different year transmissions yuo might have to do the control module.  Nice lift too!

I have the 2wd selection option.  I will check th TC linkage next.  Where would I find the transmision control module?

Thanks, I bought the lift when I had more cars and needed parking, it`s nice to have for working on vehicles though.

Guys thanks a lot for the help, with your help and others I now have the Jeep running fine.  When I filled the transmission fluid I didn't run it through the gears and it was way down, I had to run it through the gears 6 times filling it in between before it was full.  Such a stupid thing but I was impatient and didn't check everything close enough.  Now I can drive it to St.Paul for the brother-in-law I sure he'll be happy to have something reliable, good timing too since the baby is due in around a month.

That's good to hear - I figured it might be that because I did the same stupid mistake last month fixing the wife's Liberty.

Now drive the bag off it a bit to make sure nothing else needs work.  :)

I'll definitely take it for a spin, I have a feeling that once they get it if anything goes wrong I'll be the first person called, haha.
