Liberty does not start when warm
« on: March 27, 2009, 09:17:33 PM »
My wife has an 02 Liberty with the 3.8L.   A problem arose about a 6 weeks ago where it would not turn over after the engine got warm.  There was power, all the lights would be on when you turned the key, but nothing at the starter.  Eventually, it would start.  It got progressively worse over the next 7 days.

I had the starter rebuilt and replaced it (could the engineers find a smaller place to put the damn thing - that was fun).  It appeared to solve the problem until today when she said it happened again.

When the truck is cold, there is never an issue. It's gone through a few tanks of fuel since the replacement of the starter.

I'm at loss as to what to check next.  Does anyone have any ideas?

I haven't worked on a liberty, but my guess would be that you have a relay that is shot. It will work when cold, but ounce the engine compartment gets heated it doesn't have enough throw or charge to close the circuit that hits your starter relay. If left it could take out your starter again. Judt my haven't seen it thoughts though.
