Jeep Won't start after minor water bath
« on: April 11, 2009, 01:07:19 PM »
Hey guys I have a 1998 TJ 4L and dropped it in a big water hole yesterday. Jeep was idling at the time and stalled after 20 minutes of spinning. Replaced rotor and cap, plugs etc. What else could it be? Water was up to the bottom of distributor.

I'm not too familar with the wiring on your specific rig, but check your fuses for injection and ignition. The water could have shorted something and took out a fuse.

It cranks over right?

check your air box, dry it out

do the tj's have a MAF sensor? or and IAT sensor?

if it's a MAF,.. then you need to try and dry it out or replace it,.. otherwise,.. get the distributor dry

check for spark?

check fuel pressure?

It cranks over fine I have checked the fuses but will check again

I will do some research on the MAF

Thanks It was a fuse.... The only one I didn't check. Changing my oil now and looks to be quite a bit of water. Anyone know how that much water would get in? My thought was spinning the tires and swamping the motor and going through the intake snorkel? Guess some water proofing is in order.

Check your diffs, tcase, tranny.  Even if they are vented up high... any place fluid leaks out is a place water gets in.
