Seasonal closures - HWY 40/940/Trunk road
« on: April 19, 2009, 02:44:00 PM »
Does anyone know for sure about seasonal closure on the trunk road?

I'm aware that Highwood pass is closed December 1 to June 15. My question is more about the gravel areas south of there. Specifically, Savannah creek and south to Coleman.

A gent at work told me that there are winter closures, but since his interest in roads doesn't really extend to anything that's unpaved, I thought I 'd ask here.

Edit:

This shows that there's a stretch between Highwood House and the 532 (Cataract Creek area) that is closed during the winter as well. That means that my question is narrowed down to the road from the 940/532 junction south to Coleman. I'd rather run that south to the pass than Hwy 22, but I don't want to drive in on the 532 and then south for 50 km on the trunk road only to find a locked gate. Does anyone know for sure?

I followed a rainbow out to a garage and found a leprichaun. The rainbow ended in a potted cactus on his porch, but there was no gold :(

The road north and south of the junction of 532 and 940 is open for about ten miles . locked gates at plataue (sp) mountain turnof and south a locked gate at either savanna creek turn of or anather mile or so south at another well head. Both roads are mantained by husky oil during the winter months. Coming from the south there is a locked gate  just past the oldman river turn of.
those gates are usually open for the may long weekend unless there is lots of snow.
You could go in on the gap road where highway 22 meets the oldman river and then turn southon highway 940 to go to Coleman. Or you could turn north and take the racehorse creek road and then turn left on the atlas creek road and come out on highway three about two miles from the bc border.Hope this all helps.
Just drove the forestry trunk road last week from GP , Benzaten junction on the 934 up to muskeg corner then on highway 40 to hinton, then highway 934 to montain air lodge where it turns into highway 940 again. All during a snow storm
