rant for today........sorry if it offends or sounds like I'm on my soapbox

  So, it seems no matter how hard I work or how much I know, there's always someone who thinks he knows more.......

I've been a licensed tech for the better part of 15 years+ (including apprenticeship) and "playing" for well over 20 years.  I'm HEAVILY experienced in front end, alignment and frame, complimented with a decent background in eletronic/engine diagnostic, and a fair bit of knowledge in off-road/racing fields.

Is it too much to ask to find a decent employer who pays decent wages who won't second guess everything I do??  I can count on one hand the number of come-backs I've had in the last ten years that were legitimate, and still have more than three fingers left over.

I'm sick and tired of being dismissed as a "greenhorn"  because of my age (35) or the age I look (25ish)

Not to blow my own horn, but I can work circles around techs doing things "their way" because I do things "my way" and those things work for me.

On almost any flat-rate or "book-time" job, I can run at 200% or more efficiency.

With the economy the way it is, new, advancement/job opportunities are few and far between.

what would you do if the no-mind boss you work for who thinks he knows everything, but in reality knows nothing, was doing his best to make things a living hell??

I'll put up with a lot from most people.....comes with the job, but do I really need to hear "do this, or else"??

     One thing I hated about working for a living, before I became self employed .  I would put my nose down and work my arse off and things would get done right and fast.  Joe Shmoe next to me did fcuk all all day, he would BS with the foreman and dick around all day.  I got twice as much work done and it was better quality yet he was making top rate and I couldn't get it for the life of me.  Why??  Because I knew how to work, he knew how to talk.  He would talk $hit all day and they were more impressed by what he said than by what I did.  Morale of the story, sad but true sometimes it doesn't matter how good you are at what you do, you need to be able to talk the talk.  You know a better way of doing something, you need to be able to explain why it's better then their way.  Hope this helps.

Sometimes you end up in a situation where you are doing your job too well, instead of being the best "worker".

As a previous employee of Tower Chrysler, I know just how you feel. I am also able to get the job done fast and right. but I was let go to make way for someone who get the job done fast but yet would comback several times before it was done right, and would sell jobs that werent needed like a brake job with 80% pad left. why you might ask. because he close friend of the service manager and only 1 out of 10 of the ripped off customers  were smart enough to question why they needed new brakes only 10,000km after they were replaced. Or maybe I was let go because when I informed my shopforman that there was somthing wrong with the rear diff of a 2008 sahara with only 3,800km(fluid was pitch black with metal shavings.) I was told to let it go and hopefully it would hold together until the warranty ran out. so I brought the customer to the foreman and asked him to repeat to the customer, his plan of action.  Come to think of it, that probably is why I was "let go".  Bottom line is if your not happy were you are go elsewere. I am now working for Andy's Mechanical. a small 3 man shop. I learn new skills everyday and the job is about the customer not the money. Not only that with this economy who can afford to go to a dealership. many of our customers have less than 40,000km and come to us to get work done.

You need to find a place like South Hill Muffler and Brake in Red Deer.  Instead of situations like above, it's the one of two places in town I will send my wife alone to get a vehicle checked out.

The other place is North Hill Muffler and Brake.

im just about 30 years old an i am licensed tech as well. i busted my arse when i was 19 to be good at what i did. my employers at the time would make me do crap work cause they thought it would squirt me off. nope. i just got it done. as i did my apprenticeship and learned more they soon noticed that i was actually pretty good at what i did. next thing you know the real big-wigs at that company noticed my numbers were good. and couldnt figure out why my manager treated me like crap. turn out the manager was an idiot, which he was, and i kept my job. but alas, i had to leave. now im in a great dealership (Big 4 Motors), managment treats me well and trusts my opinions. ive proved my ability many times. im also very honest to them when i need another opinion. i have an ego but i wont let it get in the way of my work. i also learned to have a very good attitude when managment wants to pull crap that i dont like. so i throw them some attitude and they quiet down.
dude. just cause they run the show doesnt mean they run you. tell them to F off every now and again. makes them pay attention;)
