Winch Choice
« on: May 31, 2009, 03:29:26 PM »
My buddy is gonna try to get me a steal of a deal on a winch that his work is just storing. They apparently have two different models, in various states of wear. We dont know which is in the best condition yet, but the models as far as he knows right now are a Ramsey 9000lb winch or a Warn 1200lb winch. I dont know the exact models yet, but we'll probably check it out early this coming week.

I was just wondering what your guys opinion on which would be better, assuming we find both in good condition. Basically I would like to know is one gonna perform better, last longer, is 1200lb too big or anything else as I dont know too much about winches?

I'll post some pictures and model numbers once I get them.

Thanks!

A 1200, or 12000lb?
Personally I would get the bigger one, if both are in the same condition. The 9000lb would be great for you as well, but you probably won't ever hear someone say "I should have gotten a smaller winch."
if we were smart with our money we wouldn't own Jeeps.
Here's your cup of STFU... ENJOY!

And the 12000 is a Warn. I'm not saying that there's anything wrong with a Ramsey (because I've never used one) but I've never heard anyone say "I wish that I hadn't spent the money to get a Warn"
I followed a rainbow out to a garage and found a leprichaun. The rainbow ended in a potted cactus on his porch, but there was no gold :(

12000lbs is overkill on a TJ. the rule of thumb (umm, bad choice of words?) is the winch pull rate should be 1.5 - 2x the weight of your vehicle.  so in reality, a 6k winch would pretty much suffice, a 12k winch is overkill. plus its heavy and BIG........... i'd go ramsey to be honest, specially if u can get a great deal on it.  that being said, i don't think u can go wrong with a warn.............
