Laptop GPS system for wheeling
« on: October 10, 2009, 06:58:30 PM »
Anyone doing it, if so what are you running?  I'm  just getting mine setup. I have a HP laptop with touch screen that I'm going to mount in the ZJ with a Ram mount tray. For software I'll be running Oziexplorer with e-topo maps imported to it.

The biggest draw back so far that I see(other than its size) is that it won't have trails pre-loaded like a Magellan/Garmin unit would.

You can load tracks, points and routes off your gps into Ozi its a really cool program.  I used it a bit at work, I'm a land surveyor, for spotting wellsites.  We had a coordinated airphoto made up for it and used the moving map option.  Really cool.  You might even be able to load the Garmin maps into it I'm not sure.

I use GPS map software in my truck every day, and have been for many years, you will be very happy with the RAM MOUNT parts I have been using them for years as well.
I use Microsoft streets and trips for street lvl mapping. No topo but color shaded relief and the ability to add tracks.

I have, and am using the Oziexplorer softaware. I looked at the Garmin mobile PC software and its intended for street use. It will do Topo maps but with "limitiations". For what I can tell you cann't zoom in very far.

For putting Garmin maps into Ozi, I don't think you can do that as Ozi uses raster maps and Garmin maps use vector.

I'm downloaded all my track/waypoint files into Ozi and have a pretty good picture of waiporous but thats about it. There are other areas that I frequent that have trails that sshow up in the base map of my GPS that are handy to have. Maybe I'll just have to run both units....

Not sure what to think of the Ram Mount just yet. Since its bascially a  tablet PC I'll be mounting it vertical instead of horizontal and I'm worried with the bouncing in the Jeep it may slide out the bottom. May need to "tweak" it a bit.
