transfer case slipping 249 to 242 swap
« on: July 24, 2009, 06:10:36 PM »
So I did the 249 to 242 swap on my zj I changed the sun gear and the gear cut was the same from 242 to 249. Now it "slips" out while driving  it's fully engaged in 2wd (I changed it with a wrench from underneath)  I've double checked everything I can think of anybody else have any ideas? thanks.

There is a ball & spring on the shifter rail that could be missing or damaged. It is a "detent" spring and holds the T-case in gear while driving. It's pretty hard to have the gears or chain slip and if they did you would hear a loud clunk. Also make sure when you pulled the T-case out you have all the plugs in the trans FIRMLY plugged back in. The shifting is controlled from your computer and if any of the connectors became dislodged or unplugged the trans will slip like an SOB. I almost got a ZJ that the guy did the same swap cheap because he figured he pooched the trans and it was just a plug for the TCM.  :P

I used the 249 plug and installed it in the 242. Also behind the VIC there is a couple of plugs, one red and one black. If the red one is plugged in you must swap it to the black or vice versa - whichever is used in your application. This will tell the computer which gear you are in and light up the appropriate indicator on the VIC. Mine did not work properly and I had to swap the sensor and wire before it was perfect.

Good luck!

both driveshafts are in and Ive triple checked that it's in 2wd. So today I go to put it in drive and with my foot on the brake the transmission starts to shake (the handle) and I could hear something clicking on the front passenger side?
