ABS + Axle Swap = ?
« on: August 09, 2009, 07:36:29 PM »
Hey guys,

Just wondering if anyone has had any dealings on doing an axle swap on a rig that has ABS?
I'm looking at picking up a 98 TJ for a project vehicle but it has ABS... Obviously the ABS wont be functional
since there won't be any sensors/system setup on the 44/9 I am plan on swapping in.
How would this effect the braking system it self? Other then showing the ABS light on the dash
which I'm sure can be taken care of either by removing the fuse or disconnecting the light in the dash
is there any actual problems I may run into?
Are the brake lines the same diameter size?
Any ideas?

I have a D44/D60 in my ZJ and thus have abandoned the ABS. My plan is to eventually gut it completely and redo the lines as needed. Problem is that on my '93 to properly bleed the brakes after running the master dry is I have to cycle the ABS module/pump.

Fortuantly I have a scan tool at work to do this. Unfortunatly all the sensors have to be hooked up to do it. So if I mess with the master cylinder or have the lines open for an extended time to do an axle swap and the master runs dry, I have to dig out all the ABS sensors(fortunatly I kept them), hook them up and then cycle the system.

Other than that I have had no issues with having the ABS system still in.

I have read as well that there are some goofy metric lines in the mix that can cause problems with hooking the lines directly to the master.

This is on a '93 ZJ and you may not encounter these problems.

dynatrack and currie both make and sell axles with abs on and all you have to do is plug it in , butt $$$$ . The tj has abs so it has the rear dana 35 you could put alloy axles in and you would be good for up to 35 tires with a truss and 33 with out. If you all ready have the dana 44 and 9 inch  then that would be a no brainer. I have 33 s with abs and alloy axles. Do a search on naxja or onother large jeep forums  on how to disconnect the abs.

Don't want to buy built axles, 3/4 of having a Jeep is building it and the other 1/4 is abusing! The stock axles aren't an option to build because Im going to be running 37" Boggers....

Thanks for the reply!
I have heard that the lines are different sizes :( causing problems when bypassing the ABS system and going straight to MC. Do you know if I was to reline the whole TJ with non ABS size brake lines would they hook up to the MC? Is that satisfactory just to do that?
Did you just remove the fuse from the dash control panel?

From what I read the lines running along the body too the wheels are a standard size but the lines going from the ABS module to the master were an odd size. Meaning that often the lines from the body wouldn't bolt into the master without building an adapter line.

Okay so I might have a problem at the MC side of things... Do you think it would be better to get a non abs MC and just replace all the lines?

would it not be possible to simply drill out a hole directly thru the valve on the ABS module, so that it does not impede the flow?
