Proper Axle Gear Selection

Hi guys,

I just picked up '97 TJ with a 4cyl and a std tranie. I'm swapping HP44/9 axle combo into and I'm lost as to what gear ratio to run in it. I will be running 37's and play most of the time in the mud....
Anybody dare to run 4cyl+37's+mud?
Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated!

I loved my YJ when it had the 4 "Angry" squirrels running it; lots of torque.  The 4 banger is a great little engine offroad and i would agree with JOhnny and go as low as you can for gears

I understand doing with as low gear as possible for rock crawling... but won't low gearing hurt me in the mud?

very simple........... would you rather bog down in first gear and stall in a hole, or have enought power to actually spin the tires (even if it ain't spinning fast enough)

maybe you should go ask those toyota boys ;)

i have 4.56s and i have problems clearing the 36s locked front and rear.........

BIG tires for 4cyl. Low gears are critical. Go as low as possible or you'll never even spin em at all. FYI 4cyl aren't great mud machines, but any idiot can stomp the throttle on a HO engine and cause chaos, the 4 banger will make you a better wheeler cause you'll have to plan out your runs. Mud will cost huge $$$ to play in, get technical and enjoy the lightweight mountain goat you have. Or get a big block and matched drivetrain to handle it.
