VHQ Video Stores,.. Closed?
« on: October 28, 2009, 08:13:49 AM »
Sooo ah went to go pick up a couple of DVDs last night at the local Dover VHQ video shop and oddly it had all the staff inside but the doors were locked,.. There was more than just I standing like a stunned *%#@ at the the door when this rather large gentlemen walked over and informed us that the he was a Sheriff and this store was CLOSED. I know there are a few other VHQ Video stores in Calgary and area , did they all get their doors locked up?

Edit: I think they were also called "The Movie Gallery"

The movie gallery in Cochrane closed about a year ago.

Thats to bad about the one in Dover, when I lived there I went to it all the time, was close to where I was.

Ummm..cuz we all bought fancy-schmancy blue-ray players?

Some of us still enjoy going to the neighborhood video store and walking around the aisles; picking up dvd's and reading the back for info? There are a lot of foreign flicks that are not available online yet. It gives us a reason to leave the house and get popcorn?

I don't like to see the demise of little franchises. The VHQ down the street was gonzo a few months back. I don't know what happened to it.

Langdon has a video store? Who'd a thunk it? Wow!

Another "Mom and Pop's" store closing. That's sad. I guess it's easier to "pirate" a movie online now. Convienant stores are selling DVD's in little machines now too. I guess the little guy can't compete anymore.

Don't talk about Trevor that way! He's standing right there, dude.  ;D
I followed a rainbow out to a garage and found a leprichaun. The rainbow ended in a potted cactus on his porch, but there was no gold :(

In Cochrane we've had one video store thats been around since forever, I remember when they were renting beta tapes. A few others came and went and then Movie Gallery came in, they had a much better selection so I went there for a few years. Then Blockbuster opened up two blocks away and crushed them. I kept going to Movie Gallery  for awhile out of loyalty but always seemed to end up at Blockbuster cause they had what I wanted. Then they came out with no late fees and I stopped going to Movie Gallery cause they really hosed you on late fees.

Now Movie Gallery is gone(don't miss them at all) and its just Blockbuster and that small video store thats been here from the beginning. I don't really see Movie Gallery/VHQ as the small guy, just another failed company.

For the record Blockbuster did try to buy out Movie Gallery when they came in but Movie Gallery declined the offer. No idea if it was a fair offer or not.

video rentals have to be a tough business now, walmart and other places sell older movies for the same price as rentals. Pay per view on the tv doesn't have late charges and you can get a movie  without even getting dressed. I imagine you can probably download most movies on the internet as well.

You have to wonder how much longer these stores will even exist.
I used to have an open mind but my brains kept falling out.
