Wrangler JK wheels on WJ?
« on: November 04, 2009, 10:55:46 AM »
would a set of wheels (model 9073 or 9072) from a newer Wrangler JK fit an 2000 WJ largdo, stock suspension?
I cant see any evidence that says no, but I'm not sure what backspacing is. is it like offset?

The wheels will fit since the bolt pattern is the same, the tires will not though

A guy may be selling me his wheels and tires from a wrangler JK but you suggest the tires wont fit, though the wheels will fit my WJ?
Is the tire to wide or too tall perhaps?

I believe that the JK wheels have less backspacing than the WJ wheels (but Fraser may well correct me on this. He knows more about the ZJ and WJ platforms than I do)

Also, JK's come with either 31's or 32's. I think that a WJ would need a lift to clear those, but again Fraser would know better than I.
I followed a rainbow out to a garage and found a leprichaun. The rainbow ended in a potted cactus on his porch, but there was no gold :(

The JK will be a 31" or 32" tire depending on platform, to fit a 31" on a WJ we have typically had to use a 2" BB.  For a 32" tire you would be looking a ta 2" BB and the trimming the front bumper, maybe pinch seam in the wheel well and not having much flex.  Stock 16x7 WJ wheels have a 6" backspacing, while the stock JK 17" rims have 6.25" backspacing.  Your wheels will sit slightly closer in to the body, couple this with 32" tires that are wider and stock suspension will result in MAJOR rubbing.

The JK rims will stick out about an inch further than your current wheel as for size. A 245 75 16 is the largest diameter tire that generally will fit on a stock WJ if it has the upcountry suspension option. But that all depends on the tire as well as how sagged your stock springs are. Peoples interpritation of fit also differs. For example my V8 WJ laredo has brand new (less than 3 month) Upcountry springs on it and my 245 75 16 Goodyear territory AT will rub at full lock when in reverse if I dont trim.

Actually they will stick out a max of 0.25" more or a max of 0.25" in depending on the model of JK you got the rims off.

damn. ok thanx all.
Sounds like I'm stuck finding a wheel from another WJ owner. They are scarse around here.

my other option was just to buy some basic wrangler wheels, silver steelies and mount a set of summer tires that came on my jeep WJ's factory wheels.
I removed the summer tires (all seasons really but that means summers in Calgary) and installed some new Winter tires.
And instead of switching tires on the same wheels, I figured a second set of wheels would be better and cheaper in the long run.

Keep an eye out for 16" JK wheels. There are JK 16s that are steel and ones that are alloy.  I have a set of the alloys on my 04 WJ.  They stick out a little more than the stock WJ wheels. If you're still looking in a couple weeks, I may be in the market for some black steelies and moving my JK 16's.

MAGNUTSWJ please let me know if you decide to do this.
I am looking at buying 16"  JK wheels and yours are the ones I'm looking for, since I already have 16" tires to mount on them.
that would be great.
