Sorry this may sound stupid.
« on: January 16, 2010, 11:17:49 AM »
I'm not getting the check engine light but I was wanting to check for codes anyway. I've got an 89 cherokee and my Haynes Manual calls for a DRB-II code reader... Is this the same as a OBD-II reader?
Thanks for your help

Not at all. OBD 2 wasnt implemented until 95, and even later on most jeep models since 96 didnt happen.

I im not mistaken you have a pre HO application, which might be renix injection. Again, not even the same as OBD 1 stuff. You will have to check around some more, but it definately isnt obd 2.

DRB-II is the oem chrysler scan tool used at dealerships for vehicles that came with fuel injection from the late 80's to the mid-2000's. any old school aftermarket scan tool with the right hook-up should plug in and read some info on your jeep.

It's the   " hook up " part that is tufff to get hooked up with.

My OTC set up doesn't have any of the connectors in it and this is the delux set up , er  , it was at one time , I'm not aware of any OTC   stuff thats able to talk with the renix stuff .   I've been wrong before though.

Anytime I've owned any of that old stuff , I just drive around with my fingers crossed that nothing goes wrong , same  with the old carbed feedback junk , .............. um ....... lovely stuff that it was.

There are stored codes on an '89 XJ with the Renix system so there is no useful information to be gained. You'll have to TS it the old fashioned way.

EDIT:: sorry that was supposed to say there are NO stored codes.... my bad

Heh...
Well bought this bad boy for 600 off Kijiji
Engine idles really low like 400ish
Have to hold it on the mat to start it.
It dies often when I take my foot off the gas
and there is a metalic ticking sound coming from between the engine and tranny at low RPM only, it goes away over 1000rpm.
Plan on doing a compression test tomorrow and I know it needs some new gaskets.
Engine has 260k on it...
Any advice?

I know it's got a bad fuel injector on the #1 Cylinder... Think this could be most of the problem?

Replace the injector first, hard to trouble shoot one problem with another one getting in the way.

Give the throttle body a REALLY good cleaning, remove the idle bypass selonoid and clean it and the hole really well. You're going to need a torx set. Set the TPS as above. IF its still idling bad pull the plugs and see what they are like.

Metallic ticking could be loose Torque Convertor bolts if its an automatic. Remove the inspection cover bottom front side of tranny. If the bolts are loose, remove one at a time, clean threads, apply locktite and reinstall. Bolts can only be accessed one at a time by rotating the engine.

Manaul tranny could be a bad pilot bearing or throwout bearing. Drive till you canèt stand noise and then remove tranny and replace as nessacary. ;)

Haha, cool thanks Jay.
I just ordered a set of re-man injectors from percisionautoinjectors.com. $95 for a set of 6 rather than $140 a piece from NAPA... 6-10 days though...
Ran my compression test. It didnt turn out too bad 120-130 on all cylinders but it looks like a lot of buildup so maybe I can just run some additive through it to clean it up a bit.
No chance of checking the TPS... Boss walked into the shop and booted me for having 1 Beer...
Anyways, I'll just have to tinker away at it bit by bit. I did have oil inside the air intake hose... Don't know what this means but it can't be good...

Thanks for all the responses and help. I really appreciate it

Oil in the intake isn't uncommon on those. There's probably oil in the air filter box too. The pcv system is crap on them and often plugs up causing oil to get pumped into the intake.
