3.8 vs 3.7l 6cyl
« on: February 11, 2010, 12:09:04 PM »
My jk(08) has a 3.8l v6 and the grande Cherokee(09) has a 3.7l v6.  When I bought the GC I was told it had the same engine. Can anyone tell me the difference between them?

2 very different engines indeed. it still amazes me to this day why chrysler did not use the 3.7L in  the JK. it was allready setup for any rear drive transmission they would use in the jk. it has good power numbers. its a reliable engine. and yet they take a front drive engine, turn it sideways and use it in a place it never should have been.
the 3.8L is based off the 3.0L-3.3L-3.8L design chrysler has been using for many years. older folks can tell you how long and what they originally came from but thats as far as i know. the 3.8L is a good engine in a minivan. good power and reliability. seeing it the jk may bring out some weak points. i think it gets over worked in the 4 door jk's.
as for the 3.7L. its used in the dakota, liberty/nitro, grand cherokee, commander, and some bottom feeding 1/2 trucks i think. its a solid engine that will go a long while with proper maintenance.  we had to replace one a year ago because the lady did 3 oil changes in 87000kms. the new engine arrived with cummins stickers and papers with it... so im wondering if its an engine that cummins built or owns or...
as well, the nitro has an R/T option that has a 4.0L engine. it looks similar to the 3.7L so even i wonder if its a bigger version of the 3.7L with more oomph. thats the engine that should have gone in the jk. my opinion of course. although a hemi v8 or at least a 4.7LHO would be nice too;)

glad to hear it's a good engine.  It does seem to have lots of pep with the 5 speed trans in the GC.
I never should have believed the salesman!! Any way I found out when I bought two oil filters for the jk thinking they were the same.
I tend to do maintenance meticulously so I think I'll be ok. I'm just curious about these things.
Thanks for that good info

Beware the words of a salesperson!  Like hps4ever says, the 3.8 and 3.7 are not the same.
I won't make disparaging remarks about any particular salesperson, or say that all are villians, but on more than one occasion I've been told utter lies in the interest of making a sale.  My brother and I went to look for a new Dakota for him and his wife, and were quoted $10,000.00 over the phone for said truck.  We went to look at it and were instead shown a Durango.  After a little clarification, we found the correct truck, and sat down with the finance people for a quote.  They shoved a paper at my brother, told him to sign it so they could check his credit.  I said, "Read it," which he did, only to discover that it was in fact a bill of sale for this Dakota.  Sticker price was about $22,500, but after doing the math on their payment schedule, he would have been paying $44,800.  Needless to say we left that dealer with no intention of returning.  Way off topic, I know, but a good reminder to do your own research, and take everything your salesperson tells you with an 80 kg bag of sidewalk salt.

X2!!!! it goes without saying  but for anyone looking into buying a new or used vehicle from a dealer of any kind (not a private sale) please do the research and get the sales person to sign and agreement on paper to anything he/she says to you. ive heard way too many horror stories. again its off topic, but this is just one point where a mis-guided sales person could tell an average buyer anything they want to get a sale.
the big thing when the 3.8L came out in the new JK was that it had more HP then the out going 4.0L. whcih is true. too bad all that power is at 5000+ rpm.
anyways, this very subject hit a sore spot with me.
