Separate Shifter
« on: June 08, 2010, 09:58:42 PM »
So is there some trick to separating the shifter into two pieces.

There is a difference between 97 & 98 such that my TJ shifter won't work properly in the XJ transmission I just installed.

Before I start cutting and welding does anyone know if the shifter comes apart in two pieces at the square rubber piece. I've got it in my vice but it doesn't want to wiggle out. There are four pieces of metal - one on each side - are they some sort of compression fitting that I'll need to grow a couple of extra hands to get them to release.

If you look in the picture the area I am looking to separate is the black portion of the shifter that is approximately 1.5 inches diameter and has rubber inside.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Got it by driving in a tie rod fork.
