So I picked up my for parts MJ today and when I am done swapping the good box onto my truck I want to take the old Mj and cut the back or build a frame and set the other box on that and make a trailer out of it. I will be changing the diff out for a trailer axel. 
I was wondering if I can cut and build off of the existing frame or do I have to build a whole new frame, for it?
Why does your Jeep say Toyota on it?

I am planning to cut it off between the cab and the box and  build the frame out from there.
I will have to have it inspected and stamped in order to get the plat. I just don't know what they are looking for.

When I went thru this 4 years ago they were looking to make sure its not built from stolen materials, not looking at safety or anything like that. Keep the VIN plate from the door or the cab as well as the bill of sale for the truck and the receipt for the axle and you shouldn't have any problems getting it inspected.

Honestly though I've found pickup box trailers not to be that great of a trailer for the work that goes into them. They end up being WAY heavier than they need to be for the weight they can carry. Think about it, you're dragging around half a truck. ok minus the engine and drivetrain, so a third of a truck? By the time you buy an axle and hitch you're around the same cost as a used trailer.

Now if you're doing for the cool factor of matching your Jeep thats another story......

What I've usually seen done is the frame was cut in front of the cab, the cab removed and then the frame was heated in front of the box and bent inward to form the "V" of the tongue on the trailer.

`48 CJ2A, `54 CJ3B, `97 TJ, and 03 WJ...batting close to .500 when it comes to jeep models owned vs. jeep models created.....

what i may sugest is toss the stock frame from the parts box. it way over kill. i realy sugest a trailer already made like the one hdepot sells. nice light frame and axle. dont use the stock axle from the jeep as its heavy and hard to setup the breaks to works.

Aaron, go with your original plan and build it.  I think the truck box is going to be to heavy, even if you change up the frame and axle

Build it because it is cool.  If you decide to swap frames, give me your old box, frame, and axle, and I'll build one.  :)
