JK Clutch Squeak
« on: June 26, 2009, 10:50:34 AM »
I've noticed in the past 2000 or so KM's (from 25,000 up to about 27,000) that there's been a "squeek" when I let out the clutch pedal on my JK. I had suspected that it was the well-documented issue with the clutch disc on the JK, but the dealership is telling me that it is not that issue. They're suggesting that it's either the clutch pivot or the slave cylinder. As far as truly diagnosing it, they're telling me that they'd need to drop the transmission...and that since this is a clutch-related issue and I have more than 20,000 km on the Jeep that it would not be warranty work.

Any thoughts on how serious an issue this probably is? It's not something that I would have been worried about if I hadn't read the TSB regarding known issues with clutch discs.

Needless to say if it's an issue that won't be covered under warranty, I'm not likely to use the dealership to do the work.
I followed a rainbow out to a garage and found a leprichaun. The rainbow ended in a potted cactus on his porch, but there was no gold :(

I had a squeak in my clutch just after I bought mine.  Took it to the dealer twice and they finally fixed it.  The had to adjust the location of the clutch cable and I haven't had a problem since.  All under warranty.

Not sure if it the same problem, but worth a try.

there was a tsb on the clutch squeek. 1 tsb was for the clutch pedal at the master cylinder, just needed some lube. there was at one point another for the actual clutch disc. i think we used a clutch disc from a tj to fix that issue. i couldnt say which tsb/repair it needs though. the problem with clutchs is that they only get warrantied up to 20k. they are a wear item. not to mention changing a clutch on a jk is a pita compared to a tj.
so to cure the squeek it may need a new disc or it just the lube at the master cyl. being a clutch its a tough call on the dealers part to warranty or perform the tsb after 20k.
i just fix them, i dont know much of the politics on warranty items.
another option is that if you need a clutch anyways you can look up an aftermarket kit from centerforce or whomever.

Why change the clutch for a squeak?  does the clutch get damaged?  Because the squeak just showed up now maybe it needs an adjustment.  I know its hydraulic ( no adjustment necessary).  Wait a little longer maybe it will go away?

What are you worried about in the tsb.  All the ones that I've read seem like a customer annoyance, and not a failure of the clutch.

Wow. Necropost.

Still got the squeak, 13 months and 25,000 km later. I don't think that it's a lube issue, because I can make it squeak without ever touching the pedal. If I'm coasting in second and get on the fuel fairly fast, I can hear a little bit of a squeak.

This may be a moot point, as I'm starting to notice some very abrupt clutch engagement very late in the pedal travel. I think that I might be getting  a centerforce clutch sooner rather than later.  :o
