Oil Blowby Issue?
« on: September 02, 2010, 12:01:44 PM »

I should start by stating I am not very mechanical so hopefully this makes sense.  I have a 1990 Jeep YJ 2.5L, it has low Mileage..like 30,000 miles.  It sits alot!   I recently changed the valve cover gasket, PCV valve, ventalation valve filter, hose and associated gromets.  Last Oil change I noticed oil in the air filter box and i am getting oil carrying out of the oil fill cap.  I am not sure if there is an easy fix for this other than replacing the compression rings?  Has anyone else encountered this before?  Any advice or peoples experience would be appreciated.

Cheers,

These engines are bad for cylinder wear.  I've never taken one apart that didn't need a re-bore, last one I took apart didn't clean up with .030 over pistons!  So, you might get lucky and just need to re-ring it with milage that low but most of the time these blocks need to be bored out.  To confirm you could all ways do a compression test and see just how bad it is.  If it is still running good you can run the hose that goes to the air cleaner to a resevoir under the hood somewhere.  Let all the oil build up in there and dump it as it gets full, just make sure the container has a vent.
I just can’t resist a good mud hole!  🤦

I put a longer hose between the air cleaner and valve cover and made a loop so that it was higher than the engine so the oil would drain back  instead of running into the air box
I started out with nothing and so far I have most of it left
