first jeep

hey everyone, after looking around for a couple of months i have found myself a jeep. Its a 94 grand cherokee, black with gold pinstripe and grey leather interior. 4.0 auto tranny. bone stock besides the stereo. lol so i have a friend pricing a 3" lift for me through his shop. will have pics this weekend as i have it inspected at my buddy's shop. plans for this year:
31-33" tires
3" lift and maybe some aftermarket fender flares.
hoping to meet some you out on the trail in the next couple of months. If anyone has any ideas for low budget upgrades please feel free to comment ;D

A 3" lift would clear 31" tires on stock wheels with a little adjustment to the turn stop bolts. Unless you pick up a set of bushwacker or Icelandic offroad cut out flares, then with the proper backspaced wheels 33" tires should clear. As for the other little mods you can keep watching new thread or search old ones to see what others have done and how they worked out. Usually One mod leads to another and another and another. Again, welcome to the forum. Whenever you build a Jeep, you need to try to have a visual on what the final form will be. For example, as mentioned above, you could fit 31's without flares but 33's if you use cut-out (i.e. cut metal off the vehicle) type flares. It would be frustrating and expensive to fit 31's only to sell them several months later once you get flares and get 33's. My basic motto has been approach it by "system" e.g. suspension, wheels/tires, etc. and buy once. Maybe the vehicle will look kind of goofy for a while as you save for your next upgrade. I've known guys to put 3 or more suspension systems on their rigs due to money. Well, they certainly DID spend a lot of money as they put a series of "economy" kits on. It's kind of like women, when you're young you want every budget piece of equipment that comes your way (and quickly) but once you get older, you would like some quality and not have to replace them every few years (divorce gets expensive too). You should join the crew for an "open" run and get a feel for the style of off-roading you're building toward and ask around about what mods work. Plan, plan, plan. This is important, epecially with GC's. Since they are more rare to lift, the parts (good ones) cost a lot more than for other Jeeps.

thanks for the warm welcome everyone. the jeep im hopefully buying is being inspected tomorrow morning so hopefully by the afternoon i will have some pics.

ya. i know these things well; they are a great DD and will get you to some decent camp spots. if you wanna wheel it hard, well, plan it out, and be ready to beef a lot of components :)
what are you defining as a 'quality' lift?  tell us what you wanna run ;)

if you want 33s get ready to cut fender.  OR spend big bucks. that is your choice. 
also, if you want 33s, dont' bother with a 4L ;)  unless you wanna regear. 

and yes Steve, i have something in the works ;)   it'll be ok........ and when i win the lottery, lookout........... the 5.9er i 'll build will be unreal......

so after speaking to a trusted mechanic friend i decided not to look at the first jeep i mentioned up top. The rear end was toast and the little engine tick was coming from the bottom end. So with that said, on to what i did buy....
98 grand Cherokee, forest green with select trac 4x4. its a 4.0 with 276 xxx km's which only 6k have been put on since the last oil change in july/09. lol
needed breaks and a windshield so i managed to talk the seller down to $1500. Got the breaks done today and will do the windshield tomorrow.
