All You JK Owners
« on: November 19, 2010, 08:27:41 PM »
For those of you running larger than stock tires ... are you experiencing any of the problems wiith front axles talked about in some of the 4x4 Mags, ie bent and cracked housings and pre-maturely worn ball joints ?

How do  you find the 3.8 V6, especially on the 4 drs ?

thanks.

I've got a 4 door Rubi with 35's, 4.10's, and a 6 speed.

The 3.8 V6 is what it is. It makes enough (just barely) horsepower, but it makes it higher in the RPM band than I would like. Drive one, see if it's enough power for you. If it's not, then look at other vehicles because the "more power" options on the JK are pretty limited. You can bolt on a blower, or you can do a hemi swap - there's not much else out there to improve the engine.

I haven't had any problems with axles at this point...but I don't wheel as hard as some other folks. Yes, the ball joints are less than great...but then again, ball joints are a replaceable part that WILL wear out on any vehicle. To my mind, they fall in the same category as brake pads, unit bearings, and u-joints. As far as the front axle housings go - if you're worried, then beef them up. You can get inner sleeves, outer sleeves, gussets for the c's, and trusses off the aftermarket. Cheaper than buying a Currie axle  ;)

From the people that I know who have a good knowledge base, you're probably fine running 35's on the Rubi D44 if you don't really beat on it. If you do want to get rammy with, then sleeve it, truss it, gusset the C's, add heavier ball joints, and put in a set of Chromoly shafts. Or you could buy a D60 and upgrade to 37's  ;D

hmm OK, thanks.
I know Extreme 4x4 did a blower install. I  think they run about $5 grand.

Anyone else ?

Anyone heard when the Pentastar is coming ?
I heard a rumor that it would be in place for the 2012 model year.

*sigh*

2012 for the pentastar, allegedly.

There is an 08 AEV green hemi in the Red Deer area that is supposedly for sale in the mid 40's if you need that extra power.

OR

5.13 gears seem to be popular with the jk crowd too.

5 K is right...then you do the install. They have apparently had good luck with the kits from RIPP.

Then again, for 5K you can get the bare bones builder's kit from AEV for a Hemi install. But then you have to find a donor engine and transmission, and beef up the rest of your drivetrain to deal with the additional power. That also involves a bit more labour than a supercharger kit.  ???

Would it be worthwhile to pop in a chip and/or exhaust system to add a few HP?  Or is that more just over-rated than anything?

From what I have read, there isnt a lot to gain from either, but with an exhaust at least you may get a nice exhaust note..

Some people have said that they feel a noticeable "butt dyno" gain. It does make sense that a CAI, a free flowing exhaust, and a chip combined could be of some benefit...but you might want to figure out what it wold rally cost you in terms of dollars sent per horsepower gained.

I was doing a little reading on this today and a couple of the reviews that were on jeepforum.com and jk-forum.com made this sound fairly promising.  It was all personal reviews so there were no hard numbers to say what was being done, but the users said they noticed quite an improvement in the lower RPM range for acceleration.  Not that it is necessarily adding a bunch of power, but that it is taking out a lot of the throttle lag

What are peoples thoughts?  A few hundred dollars worth a little extra pickup in the JK?

i read the two links. i think if there is one thing that would help any jk is the lag from the drive-by-wire. i know there is the plug-in unit from Sprint Booster, but if the superchip controller can do that and more then go for it. i friend of mine performed a similar upgrade on his drive-bywire subaru and it was night and day difference, the car was a rocket off the line. if you dont mind the extra money from premium fuel then go for it. cai and exhaust would help too, sure it will cost you but these are upgrades you can do in your garage at home and spending money helps the economy.
