Wasn't asking about engaging.. I was asking about a maximum speed while in 4 hi, not confused at all, nice try though.

No no not you, Whiteout has been asked a bunch of times this week. I was talking about them. As for actual travel speed, probably faster then your jeep can and should go in 4x4 conditions ;)

Is there a limit to how fast I can go in 4 hi? I have a stock TJ 4 banger 5 speed...

No.
Now, given it's a 4 banger and a Jeep... I'd say 130km/hr downhill.  ;)

there should be a pdf of your owners manual somewhere online, that will have the info you desire.

In my old 04 f150 screw I didnt have a problem going into 4-hi at 110km/h, nor do I have an issue in the current 08 ford.  Owners manual doesnt say anything about a top speed, but interestingly, I was recently reading about the SVT Raptor, and it as a electronic rear locker that can be used on dry pavement up to a speed of 105 MPH  :o :o :o :o :o :o

I can't shift from 1-2 even if I look at the shifter and the clutch.

wut?

I had that problem the other week, when the shifter and the clutch were on the garage floor. :P

personaly . if you have to be in 4x4 on the highway you probably shouldnt be doing 120 in those conditions

2 wheel drive is just as safe if you are drive to the conditions
and if you know how to controp the occasional fish tail

dont apply the brakes  RULE NUMBER ONE

Why use 4x4?
On my drive to and from work, i pass over many iced bridges and on/off ramps. i like that my truck does not fishtail at all when passing over these structures.
i like that i can pull away at ANY intersection without holding anyone behind me up.
i like that i can travel highways at 120+ in 4wd and KNOWING that no matter how road conditions change or deteriorate, i will not NEED to control any fishtailing as it will not happen in 4x4.
Stopping is the same no matter 2 or 4wd. And that is where caution and driving conditions must be taken into consideration.

Why have 4wd and not use it? In the past 2 weeks, there would be no damage to the 4wd system.
No fishtailing, no surprise ice sections...on and on.

stopping isnt quite the same if you gear down.  gearing down in 2 wheel makes me slide more.

my pet peeve is that people sit and spin at lights and make everything more icey for the next people.  i know its not their fault but if someone who has 4 wheel drive sits and spins in 2 wheel drive, that would be my peeve.

I'd have to agree that if you have 4x4 and don't use it on the street or only when your already stuck, It almost completely negates the point of having a 4x4 in the first place. The increased wear on components likely isn't even measurable. Right now I am driving with a locked front in 4x4 and it lets me know immediately when there is too much grip on the road. Even the ploughed roads don't upset the locker much. If i tried this in summer I would need a new front axle. Just shows how much easier the tires slide on the road, even when lightly glazed with snow.

If you ask me a rear wheel drive TJ/YJ for example is probably one of the most unsafe winter vehicles you can have, if it wasn't for 4x4. No traction control, short wheel base,(no abs on mine) and rear wheel drive. Having the mentality that 4x4 is a last option, is just.....ridiculous. Even letting off the gas on some of these roads in Rocky view in 2H will send the back wagging around.
