i actually plan to do part of this drive this saturday. heading out 22x to 66, hook up to 40 and then to the smithdorian hwy to canmore. i dont think it goes right to fernie but to coleman. great drive! but... they close it december 1st and re-opens april 30th ish. so if you're gonna go, better go now. but if you do you wont regret it. go with a buddy. its kinda out there. full tank of fuel too.

There is a trail... it's not Hwy 66 from Little Elbow river to Sinbad Flats (sp?)....or the other Hwy you are talking about Eric.

It's the Trans-Rockies trail ...I have seen a crazy arse mountain bike race there before that takes 7 days.

It is not for OHV.

yeah i wasnt sure what the name of the gravel road part is. i just checked google maps, its called powderface trail. i whiteknuckled it on the gravel section. fun in summer on gravel, nerve racking in winter with ice and snow. saw a few people loking for xmas trees too. even driving out hwy 40 was nice. the big hills out that way are pretty cool. nice change from the usual ones on hwy 1 heading west.
and yes Dom, the trans rockies mountain bike race is insane, one of the hardest with world currently has. a good friend has competed a few times. the route changes a little each year. this past years event supposedly went through K-country, not sure where though. no vehicle driving on the bike trails of course but powderface trail at the end of 66 from 22x is a normal road in summer. but alas, it is closed for the winter. check google maps for all the back roads.
