Speaker Upgrade?
« on: January 29, 2011, 03:39:54 PM »
Hey everyone.

My jeep's sound system if pretty much dead. The stock sub is blown, the speakers on the sound bar are about to go it seems like.
I was just wondering if anyone knows of good replacements, I'm looking for something that's a little better than factory but not extremely expensive.

Any input is appreciated.
Thanks!

Just changed four of the five speakers in my 05 yesterday before the snow.  I put Alpine all around... 5 1/4 in the sound bar and 3 x 6in the dash. I had to modify the dash speaker pods..but it was easy and sounds great.  I did plan to change the bass speaker, but with the new ones I just added the whole system sounds great for now.   New these speakers would be about two hundred, but I got them slightly used for fifty bucks for all four.. Any quality name speaker is an improvement over stock... What kind of deck are you running..?    8)

I'm a really big fan of JL Audio stuff. It's what I put in the ranger, and what I'll probably put in the F-150 if I ever feel the need to.

Be sure to match your speakers to the headunit or amplifier. Too much power can be bad if the speaker can't handle it, however an underpowered amplifier can also be bad. An amplifier doesn't just have to push a speaker, it also has to be able to control it. Basically an amplifier has to be able to also stop the speaker from moving or change the way it moves in very little time. When you start pushing an amplifier (either in a headunit or separate) to it's limits, it will start to clip. When this happens it can send spikes of power to the speaker and can wreck a speaker in short order.

As Scott said, any brand name is going to be a huge improvement over stock, however if you're not going to run amps and upgrade your deck, you don't need to spend lots of money on speakers.

I picked up some Pioneers (no longer made, guess they were getting rid of their stock) last summer for $50 for fronts and $50 for rears (reg $100 each pair).  They sound a thousand times better than the old stock speakers.

One thing that I think really helped, was buying these adapter plates that let you install 5.25" speakers in the front.  You can also (sometimes) find 6.5" speakers that won't require much work to fit into the sound pods.  (Unfortunately my 6.5's required a little finessing with tin snips and a dremel to get them to fit)

Good luck!

Also...I upgraded because I thought one of the rear speakers was blown out, turns out the map light covers rattle in the sound pods sometimes.  So I have a full set of used factory speakers if you want them instead.

Thanks for the feedback everyone.

Just a little more information, I'm not running the factory deck, I have a Sony CDX-GT630UI.
http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10151&catalogId=10551&langId=-1&productId=8198552921665801104#specifications
Theres a link with a lot of information.

Here is the power output:
Output Power : 52W x4 High Power - 17 watts per channel minimum continuous average power into 4 Ohms, 4 channels driven from 20 Hz to 20 kHz with no more than 5% total harmonic distortion.

Power Consumption (in Operation) : 45W

I honestly don't really have a clue about speakers and amplifiers. If you guys could help, what would be the best combination (speakers, sub) to run with this deck? Do I need anything else? Recommendations?

Again, sorry, I'm very inept when it comes to sound systems.

When running speakers off a stock deck or even after market head units, your not gonna push enough power to need anything expensive or fancy. Head to any store and take a look at the lower end of the price scale and have a listen. If it sounds good go for it. They will usually have a couple speakers for 100 or less, and if you watch visions they always have some sales, i picked up 6.5 alpines for 60 bucks.

In the front i would recommend buying or fabbing some adapter plates to allow for a 5.25 inch speaker. These will generally give you better sound than a 4x3 speaker imo.

The rear sound bar can accept a 6.5 (you'll need some self tapping screws and a little fabric trim) or 5.25 using the existing holes.

As far as the built in sub, i dont think it would be worth replacing (i would just pull the fuse), unless you are gonna spend the money on a proper amplifier and sub/box.

Hope that helps.

The factory sub sounds a lot better now with the new Alpine speakers in the other locations.  I know it's not the best speaker, I thought it was toast until I hear it now with the new speakers.  Really,  we are only going to hear good sound while we have the hard or soft top on.... once the warm weather comes around and the top is down, might as well pull the face plate... you won't hear much in the wind...  So I say keep it simple...    8)
