XJ Exhaust setups?
« on: February 05, 2011, 01:26:22 PM »
The cat on my XJ is rattling and driving me crazy so im thinking of getting rid of it and doing a new muffler at the same time. Dont want something stupid loud, but I do want to hear the 4L roar a bit... :) Oh and I also dont want to break the bank...

What setups are you guys running? and if you ditched your cat what did you do to sort out the O2 sensor?

my 1990 had no cat and a hooker super comp muffler was throaty but not loud enough to be annoying, my 96 i left the cat in it without a muffler and it was a bit obnoxious

i would replace the cat with something like this http://www.magnaflow.com/02catalytic_converters/02product/displayuniversal.asp?universal=59956
you should be able to get them at Grand Prix Automotive Distributors.

on my 98 XJ I have NO cat and a FLowmaster Super 40. It's pretty loud. On my gf's TJ, NO cat and a Flowmaster Super 44. Not quite as loud. Have the computers fooled in both Jeeps, so that they run great with no CEL.

I've went thru a few setups, each being slightly less ghetto than the one before ;D

Am currently running a Pacesetter header which doesn't allow for a cat (only one O2 bung) straight into a Flowmaster 40 (maybe a 44, can't remember).  It's louder than stock obviously, but not too bad and has a nice little zing when you open it up.

The muffler was pretty cheap from Mopac, from what I recall.

If you still want to have a cat in there, Magnaflow makes CHEAP high flow cats. Where I work they're about $60 for a 2.25" one. Just another option!

what did you do with the O2 sensor after the cat? Does you Jeep ever throw codes?

Thanks

My XJ came like that so I'm not sure exactly. Some sort of piggyback module that gives the computer good O2 readings at all times.

On the TJ it was even simpler. After the cat was cut out, install an O2 sensor bung in the pipe in a similar spot to where it used to be (on the cat) Get your self some spark plug "Non Foulers" under HELP! part number 42009. They have the correct 18mm threads. There are 2 in a package. Take one of them and drill out the hole in the bottom to 1/2". Thread the unmodified one into the O2 sensor hole. Then install the modified one into the first. Thread in your O2 sensor and you're all done.

I guess it's supposed to pull the sensor up out of the exhaust flow just enough so that the increased flow (from the missing cat) doesn't give a big whiff of exhaust gases. You want it to get just a little sniff, just like factory.

This method has worked flawlessly on my gf's 97 TJ 4.0 for a while now. Just be careful where you install the stuff, it's pretty tall and may interfere with the floorboards. This TJ has a 2" body lift so it all cleared fine.

i just ordered a magnaflow high flow from the ebay for $120 shipped + gst.  that and a cherry bomb from crappy tire it works.  used the plasma to cut out the bung and weld it to the back of the cat.  total cost.  $200 and a night of sniffin' the swamparse.

Not sure about what years, but later model XJ's like my 99 has two O2 sensors but only 'uses' the upstream one for fuel mixture control.  The sensor downstream of the cat is only for emissions purposes, basically to tell you if your cat is fooked.  When I first cut out my cat I removed the downstream sensor to get it out of harm's way, but the CEL came on so I plugged in back in and just ziptied it up and out of the way.  Have since got a little handheld code reader and removed the sensor, using the reader to clear the CEL.

I'm putting a Magnaflow cat on my XJ. With the super 40 it's just too loud. The cat will smooth it out quite a bit. You can also get them with one or two O2 sensor holes in them :). Got my 2 1/4" cat with O2 sensor bung for $59 :D

Right on thanks for all the info guys!

Where do you work, and can I find em in calgary for $59??

I called Mopac and a flowmaster will be about $85, and the cats they carry are around $120. So $200 all in pretty much.

I might stick with a cat if I can find one for a reasonable price, I definitely want to be able to hear the heep breath...just dont want to wake the neighbours every morning!  :P
