99 TJ Tranny
« on: February 17, 2011, 09:53:25 PM »
Hi All,
Just purchased a 99 TJ a couple of weeks ago.
The 5-speed manual transmission is thick as molasses on these cold days and shifting requires some doing.
Once it warms up its a bit better.
I would like to change out the gear oil to something a bit less viscous. Any suggestions? It's an AX-15 tranny.
Probably would like to go synthetic.

Cheers

I use Royal Purple Synchromax in mine.
It shifts like butter even with these cold temperatures.

You can get it at Mopac.

Redline MT90!

Expensive though.

Try popping the bottom of your shift boot up out of the center console 9/10 shifting problems is that stupid boot not the tranny itself.

Yeah.....was considering the rubber boot thing. That rubber sure stiffens up in the cold.
I'm not sure what's in the gear box now but when it hit minus 30 a while back, it is pretty hard to
move the shifter anywhere....

Pull the plastic boot retaining trim piece and let it "float".

Also, when you run the engine to warm it up, put the t-case in neutral and shift the tranny in 2nd or 3rd gear and let the clutch out while warming up. It really makes a big difference in warming up the tranny fluid and it will shift much, much easier.
