yep. your buddy probably said something stupid to warrant that ticket.  90% of the time thats how it happens.
unless he was the victim of a completely unfair cop who 'had it out' for an innocent individual whom was obeying the laws in their entirety ;)

I think a stinger could also be called a grill guard or push bar. If they're illegal that makes for alot of possible tickets out there when you start counting all the trucks, hiway tractors and even cop cars out there on the roads. So I'm sure there would have been semi-nova cameras set up to take pictures and cash in on it by now if its illegal.

I tried to do some research about if Stingers are illegal.

I called the company that I bought the bumper from and they said exactly what esi said. I stinger is no different from what the big rigs run on their trucks. Both the stinger and the grill guard on the big rigs are the same distance away from the front of the truck or my Jeep. I have called a couple 4x4 places around Calgary and they all have told me that stingers are not illegal.

I did find one thing out that I never knew about. When you start modifying your Jeep your Insurance Company wants to know about modifications that you have done. When I called them I asked about the Stinger and I explained how far it stuck out from the front of the Jeep and they said they would still insure my Jeep with the stinger. They told me that the only way that they would stop insuring my Jeep is if the stinger made my Jeep go faster. So I feel a lot better about the stinger.

I think it's either a commercial vehicle or BC thing then, I know someone who got a ticket on a welding truck. I'll have to ask. Either that or they were using the obscured liscence plate BS. So yeah I guess bike racks would fall into that catagory! Then again, like mud flaps it would depend on how much they really care at that given moment.

It's up to the municipality to create and enforce hitch laws.  Or that's what I've seen, I know in Edson you have to take them out of you're not towing or you can get a ticket.  Some places in northern BC are the same.
