New to Calgary
« on: February 27, 2011, 12:14:10 AM »
Hey, just moved into town and am desperatley wondering about the type of wheeling I can expect to find, as well as maybe a couple hints on where to start looking.  So far I've heard of Bragg, MClean, and warparious (might be spelled wrong).  Is it all just mud or are there some trails and rocks to be found out there.  Any insight would be helpful.  And hey, when's the next meeting.

Thanks, James

Thanks...I have a pretty built '96 grand cherokee that I think is about to be parted in favour of a Newer 08'-09'ish Rubicon.  I want to hit Moab and the Rubicon in the next 2-3 years and the Grand isn't up to it.  I also have a stock 98' Grand cherokee with the 5.9 that was susposed to see all of the '96 upgrades but I'm not sure I want to do all the work again.  The Rubicon is a reliable turn key alternative to countless more hours and dollars spent on the other Jeeps.  We just got here from Kamloops BC and am looking forward to wheeling here with my two dogs...hoping the trail rides/camping outings are dog friendly

Sounds like me. I've got a '93 ZJ built up on 36"s that's pretty much only good for trail use. Been thinking about switching over to something a little less radical so I can get more use out of it driving it on the street. Debating weather to build another ZJ or go with an unlimited, need 4 doors for the family. Don't see dropping $40K on a trail rig happening anytime too soon. Either that or say the heck with it and leave the family at home and go to a quad.

Anyway to answer your question there are two offroad areas close to Calgary. Mclean Creek is near Bragg Creek but is closed to suvs/trucks in the winter months. Waiporous is located NW of Cochrane and is open year round but had severe trail restrictions implemented in it a few years ago.

Watch the threads and hook up on a run.
