Cherokee and its alternator
« on: March 09, 2011, 11:01:16 PM »
I own a 2000 jeep Cherokee and im looking to build it up. One thing i leanrt first hand was the altenator is super low.... I was told it would be a good idea to go to pick a part and get a bunch of them and change the brushes... i don't know anything about alternators. I am new to jeeping and It would be great if anyone could give any advice.

The Cherokees do have them mounted underneath the AC compressor for whatever reason, and for daily driving, its fine. One thing I can tell you is stay away from the Alberta mud. Its wicked silty here and will eat parts like cancer. If you are responsible on the trails, keeping out of deep water when possible, as well as deep mud, you should likely never have any problems with your alternator, even being mounted as low as it is. If you want to carry a spare, for $20.00 at pick-n-pull you have that peice of mind, but honestly, I would carry a first aid kit, fire extinguisher (not your dinky kitchen model), and perhaps a spare axle for your XJ before putting an extra alternator in the back. Thats just my 2 cents :)

If you keep the underside of your rig clean it shouldn't bear any problems on the trails. Mine has been running fine since 2001 and its given me no grief. Mclean is absolutely notorious for having silty, sandy mud, and if thats where you would like to play this summer as your pm suggested, I would be sure to wash your jeep down after wheeling, as that couple dollars at the car wash, will save you hundreds later.

And of course, welcome to the CJA forum :)
I did a Google search for "hot trannies" but nothing came up about oil coolers  :o

Worrying too much about mpg with a Jeep is similar to worrying about your sister's virginity. An ok thing to be concerned about but...

If you don't mind losing your A/C you can remove the compressor and mount the alternator in this spot.  It requires a custom bracket and perhaps a different length belt (??).  Sweet little mod.

I killed 3 alternators in 2 years in my 2000 Cherokee.  One crapped out in PC and I had to leave my jeep out there.  Now my alternator almost touches my hood and is the cleanest part of my engine.  It does use a shorter belt, I did lose my A/C that didn't work anyways but I don't think I'll ever have to change my alternator again.
I just can’t resist a good mud hole!  🤦

Being a Machinist, could you not get a nice shiny aluminum badge custom milled? ;) Then you would have a 3d sticker!  :o
