start your hole build a fire in it, use it for your BBQ make sure you keep her burning have lots of parties for your jeepin friends by end of summer should be thawed out to dig bigger hole

is this a deep discreet hole needed to throw say.. a rug into or is this more of a drainage issue, cause it depends how determined you are, you can dig a hole in winter... it'll just take you longer.

I remember a winter exercise in Gagetown when they told us to dig 2 man trenches... they turned out to be shell scraps about 2 inches deep... it was November and Gagetown is made of rock. but hey this is the prairies.. easy digging right?

I spent a week and a half digging a battle trench in Gagetown once.

I still have nightmares about that week sometimes...

When the big puddles from the snow melt start to disappear then the ground is thawing out, I used to form and pour foundations for a living and April was usually when the digging got easier.

The frost went pretty deep this year.  I work in the new home industry.  I've watched an excavator dig a hole for 3 days for a basement, 1 basement.  They figured up to 10' deep in spots.

I know of some guys from Oregon and all you have to do is tell them there is gold there and they will dig it for you. When they get to where you want stop and kick them out.
