Insurance
« on: March 21, 2011, 05:47:43 PM »
I didn't want to hijack the other thread, but I wanted to say something regarding insurance on our vehicles.  I don't work for an insurance company, I'm not a broker and I sure don't know everything about insurance, but I do deal with insurance companies on a daily basis so I have heard of some pretty sad stories.  So please take this for what it is, and talk to your insurance agent if you have any concerns about your coverage.

What I want to caution people on is whether you are reporting modifications or not to your insurance company.  You need to be aware that if a modification you are doing to your vehicle is something that would change your coverage in any way you need to report that.  It doesn't matter if you feel you need it for the coverage of the parts or not, but you need to think about it from a liability point of view.  If you get in an accident, and you have done some major modifications without reporting it, the insurance company has the right to refuse coverage in some circumstances because of a breach of policy.  It's one thing to have no coverage on your vehicle, but what if you injure someone and they sue you.  Can you afford to pay that out of pocket?  If you can't pay up, are you ready to have your paychecks garnished until it's paid for?

Please be careful with insurance as the insurance companies will have their a$$es covered VERY well.  Check over your policies and make sure you are covered.  If you need to, put special riders on your policy.  If a company says they won't cover you, then I would look for another company that will (or you could look at fighting it...there are some limitations on refusing insurance coverage I believe).

The amount you are covered for should also be carefully looked at, this is no different then with your home policy.  If you have $20000 worth of jewelry but your policy only covers $5000, you best be getting some appraisals done and have riders on the more expensive pieces.

most insurance companies will also not cover our modified rigs.

at least i haven't found one yet.........

an example is a roll cage; that will void most insurance policies; same with tires that sit outside the factory fenders.

i tried to do that......... they threatened to cancel my policy and refused to insure the jeep.   then i lied and said i was 'thinking' about it..............

if you find a company willing to insure a fully modified rig, let me know........

For the 16th time.... BLUE CIRCLE will cover us. I went through 8 different companies before I heard a YES. Some would cover the truck and all of the mods EXCEPT for the "larger than stock sized tires", and some would only cover up to 31" tires.
I was honest with them all, as I don't have the $$ to pay out someone if I end up hurting somebody.
if we were smart with our money we wouldn't own Jeeps.

blue circle is a broker not an insurance company.

blue circle does deal with ECONOMICAL MUTUAL insurance company.  economical mutual will insure our jeeps with mods and there are many brokers who deal with them, you just have to get an insurance agent who knows what they are doing.

i started with All-Alta w/ economical mutual but switch to blue circle when i insured my bikes there but my jeep policy is the same as is cost per month.

I, m with AMA and there is a form you fill out and there are two items of interest
Q. Is the Vachel modified for speed?
Q. What modifications are done?
No it is not modified for speed. Do I race with it? No
Yes there are mods really, keep it really short.  Lift, lockers, big tires, winch bumpers. Is it heavily modified? No it does nothave a tube chassis or changed the suspension type.
Had several claims over the years and never a problem.

I'm with Economical mutual and the only thing they are concerned with is if its modified for speed, I told them it has a small lift, lockers, and larger than stock tires, I also told them that its for personal use only and drives less than 250km/year. They said no problem and insured me for my appraised value.

Thanks for chiming in here guys.  It will at least let people know there are options out there.  I just wanted this thread up here for people to be aware of it.  Hell, i didn't know that was an issue until I had saw another post on it.

Just don't cheap out on insurance.  Make sure you have the right coverage for what you are doing.  Most of you wouldn't even remotely consider putting some inferior piece of suspension on your vehicles.   So why cut corners on something that can save your arse in a bad situation?

Johnny, I'm going to pick on you for a second.  :P
i tried to do that......... they threatened to cancel my policy and refused to insure the jeep.   then i lied and said i was 'thinking' about it..............

When it comes to insurance, please do yourself a favor and never lie to the insurance companies.  This would be a prime example where if you were in an accident they could flat out refuse to cover you because you with-held information about your vehicle.  Then if you were at fault and the person on the other end sued you, your would really be up sh!t creek.  It's just not worth it.

To end my ranting about this, everyone just be careful out there.  There are enough idiots out on the road that we need to watch out for and worry about.  Don't take the risk of not covering yourself.  No one else is going to do it for you.

I am not with AMA but short of the several claims part this is my experience with my insurance company.  It was as I expected as I had asked them the question in advance whether I would be covered.  And my replacement clause is also inclusive of mods.

They will classify it with quads. But that means absolutely NO STREET driving. no Raf, not even to the Royal Ripoff for gas.

I called my insurance (Melosche Monnex (TD)) to inquire about lifts, aftermarket fenders/bumpers and occational offroading, after half a day she got back to me, said:

"With your driving record (it's clean) there would be no premium or deductible increase if you were to add modifications to your jeep. Provided the modification values are under 10 grand and the jeep is not used for buisness offroading and/or competitions. I would just ask that you call in and let us know when you do install a mod so we can update your profile to include those value adds."
