Rear Differential - Command trac VS Trac loc - HELP!!!
« on: May 26, 2011, 04:27:46 PM »
My jeep cherokee rear diff is  TRAC LOC and i found a jeep with COMMAND TRAC  rear differential .... are these the same types of limited slip differentials?
Can i use the Command trac diff in my jeep (with the Trac Loc slip diff?) and still have a limited slip diff. (4x4).  Does it work the same as my TRAC loc?
Note: size and gear ratios are the same.

Command Trac denotes what t-case you have. Command Trac/Select-Trac/Quadra-Trac, etc.

Trac Loc means that you have a limited slip in the rear axle. As long as the gear ratios are the same it will work for you. However coming from a Jeep that had a Command Trac t-case does not mean that it is a limited slip diff.

Either look inside the diff at the carrier if the cover is off.

Turn one wheel(drum if wheels are off), if the LS is in decent shape the other side should turn in the same direction and the pinion should turn. If it turns opposite or the pinion spins and the other side doesn't spin then either its not a LS or its worn out.

Sometimes there is a tag under one of the diff cover bolts that says LS or use friction modifer.

Whats wrong with your diff? It its JUST the spiders and the gears and carrier are OK I would put in a lockright.

If you have 3.07s I would buy a pair of diffs with a lower ratio.

What are you working on?

I wouldn't pass up an open diff, a lockright is $300-$400, easy to install and works WAY better offroad than a LS.

I assume you are going to reshim and check the gear pattern and backlash?
