Seals - including rear main - XJ
« on: June 04, 2011, 05:22:15 PM »
Hey, just wondering if anyone might have a garage they might be willing to rent, and help wrench. I think my rear main is starting to show signs of retirement and need to replace it sooner then later. There are some other seals that I need to replace so if anyone is willing, I could use an extra hand and some good knowledge. Even if you want to just point me in the right direction I could use the advice. Would like to get this done before 101 if at all possible.

I have time, tools and experience if you need. I'm in the NW though, but have time next sunday.
Getting grumpier every day.

The 12th? I'd be good for then.
I have a few tools, but extra will always make it easier. I have never done a rear main but I know it's gonna take at least 6 hours.

I'm in the NW as well. kinda close to SAIT.
Do I need to get anything more then just the seal? I have a couple others that I think are going... Might as well replace them while we are at it if you are okay with that?

If you are doing the rear main seal you have to do the oil pan gasket as well.

Apeman, thanks for the heads up that you can't make it this weekend.
Does anyone else have a garage and wanna lend a hand helping me with my rear main? I have the seal and the oil pan gasket. Should probably fix the rear pinion seal as well while we are at it.

I would also do the oil pump if you got the money to spare.

Here is a write-up I used when I did my rear main:

Only advice I have is take your time putting the new seal in. I rushed this part(Stupid me) and ripped the seal, had to buy another one.  >:(

Other than that, it's a little messy and time consuming, but it looks like you'll get some helpers. Good luck!

Just so your aware, you may want to be wary of changing your rear pinion seal on your own... There is a potential to upset your gears by doing so, if it is not done properly. That is one thing you may want to leave to the pros, and not take on in your garage. There are lots of people on this site that can definitely help you, and I will be the first to say I am not one in this case,  but when it comes to determining your preload on the pinion and whatnot, it takes torque wrenches, time and patience. May want to research that one a bit more before attempting it in the garage :) Your rear end is not something you want to mess with.
I did a Google search for "hot trannies" but nothing came up about oil coolers  :o

Worrying too much about mpg with a Jeep is similar to worrying about your sister's virginity. An ok thing to be concerned about but...

dang... and I thought the rear pinion was going to be the easy one. Thanks for saving me a huge headache and costly repair. I'll save all of it for when someone capable is able to help out and donate some garage time. If I can't get it done this weekend, I have the option of waiting for next weekend. Just gotta watch out how much I drive between now and then.
