Hey, I'm fairly new to 4x4ing, but a friend of mine from last summer had an old CJ and I got to ride in it a couple times and I loved it!  Also a couple years back my cousin had his YJ (now sold) up at my Uncles Cabin and we did a bit of offroading in it.

So l should probably mention that I'm a student, so funding isn't that great, so what I'm looking for is something that runs well, but doesn't need to look all that hot (I can paint it later, and do some bodywork on my own).  I can also do a lot of the mechanical work myself, depending on how difficult it is (so far I've done everything on my bike in my signature, from adjusting the tapets, cleaning/balancing the carbs, to fiberglassing cracked fairings).

Unfortunately I'm not well versed in Jeep Lingo.  If anyone has some technical sites they can suggest reading, or books to grab from the library, that would be awesome.

I was reading another topic where you said you might be able to find a passenger seat for someone wishing to go for a ride....would anyone be willing do to this for the May 6th run?  Unfortunately I'm already busy for both April rides, so that's the soonest I would be able to go.  (Who knows, maybe I'll have my own jeep by then!)

I think what I'm looking for is a CJ5 or CJ7, either an inline 6, v6, v8, not looking for an i4, although with the way fuel prices keep rising...
Standard Transmission, and after that I've got no idea what all the other terms you guys talk about are.
Edit: snipped a bit due to stupid comment made :P  (I've since read a bit more about everything)

I found this Jeep for sale, what do you guys think?  How are the engines in Jeeps.....260k seems really high, but he has all the records, and it sounds like it's been taken care of.  Actually, sounds like exactly what I'm looking for, except for the milage.

86 JEEP CJ-7, 4.2L, I-6, standard, 260,000 kms, 1 owner w/ service records since 1986, excellent running order, mechanically well maintained, but body needs work, 3” susp lift w/ skid plates, 31” Bridgestone Dueler A/T tires, Smittybilt 3” tubular front bumper/nerf bars, Hard/soft tops, Locking steel trunk under rear seat, Trailer hitch and wiring, $5500

Sounds like I'd also need a winch and some front / rear tow bars if I want to go riding with you guys.  I've heard from a couple places that Warn winches are the best you can get, but I havn't looked into pricing yet.

Anyways, that should be long enough for a first post.  Thanks for any help you guys can give me!

I second that. for $3500 you can't go wrong. Do an engine swap and you'll be set.
