Off Highway Camping with the Expo Trailer - suggestions?
« on: June 27, 2011, 11:45:02 AM »
I am new to Calgary as of last October, and I think I survived my first winter.  Now that the sun is out I am getting the camping itch.  I have a Rubicon LJ with 32's and a M100 Expo trailer I have built.  I just need a drive in back country  place to camp.  We have dogs, and wouldn't mind dropping the trailer and doing mild wheeling, or mountain biking.

In the states we had "Off highway back country" where you could drive your 4x4 and camp in designated areas.  If I search for "back country" here I get lots of skiing information. In fact I haven't quite deciphered the acronyms for the parks system.

I have read up on McLean, and Waiparous, but cant find any detailed information.  Any recommendations?

Thinking of heading out this weekend.

The "designated area" you're referring to we call "Random Camping". (just stay 1km away from road)

Mclean creek has lots of such spots as well as a campground, showers at the store...

Print the map in the above link and go explore!
S.E. Corner of the map, Fisher Creek PRA. Go west a few miles to some random spots...

I could be up for that also.  I understand I have to participate in two of these to join anyway?

Any details on the trail project? I don't see it on the Calender..  I cant think of a better way to learn the area than to work on it!

Well I wont be camping this weekend unless I make more progress on the trailer.  Work keeps interfering.

Im swapping the rounded fenders for wider ones and an axle with electric brakes.

Should be good to go by next weekend.
