YJ axle seal (CAD front axle)
« on: July 17, 2011, 10:11:27 PM »
this seal is driving me nuts.  i can't get it straight.  i replaced it last year to and it is leaking again, so i'm pretty sure i put it in crooked last year too

anyone have some pointers or a tool to make this go smoother? my makeshift slide hammer i've made isn't hacking it.  i can't get the seal started straight so it just goes in crooked.

getting frustrated!

any ideas would be good.

Remember when I offered to sell you the kit for that like 2 years ago for peanuts? Your cheap buttocks would have saved a lot of stress and aggravation.

Johnny, I know your pain.  There was a site that showed you how to make a tool to assist with the install of the seals and I will see if I can find it again.  Also the culprit could be your axle shafts.  I was going through a bunch of seals because the machined surface was in rough shape

More often then the not the groove worn in the shaft is what prevents the seal from doing its job.

You can try staggering the depth of the seal compared to its original placement, but its a gamble at best most times.

Have a seal puller, installer kit? Makes it a real simple job.

heeps came over today and with his magical touch, got the seal in.

bill/scott you may be right; there is a groove worn in the shaft.  likely that is the reason for eating seals.  i've got it all buttoned up for now with a spare shaft, and new seal; see how long it lasts.
hopefully long enough and until i get around to installin one piece axles!

cheers

I happen to have some one piece axles sitting in a box in the garage.

could put a speedi sleeve in there.  Could also go to a bearing supply place and get a seal that is a couple thous smaller or where the seal rides in a different spot,  if the shaft is pitted or rough then speedi sleeve it.

How did you end up getting it in? Im dealing with the same thing,

I bent the first seal when it went to a slight angle using threaded rod and a princess auto seal driver(Plastic disk that is the perfect size of the metal ring)

A little more pricey way of solving the problem....

Greg

Those won't work with the YJ 2 piece passenger axle shaft because the shafts are not the same diameter along the entire length
