Help with air/fuel ratio and timing

Can anyone help me out with the air fuel ratio and the timing on my scrambler!  I'd like to take it out for the Oct 29th run and to just have it running smooth. Its a amc 304 with a howell fuel injected conversion.

Can you elaborate a little on what the problem is exactly?

What is it doing or not doing? At what idle speed? What codes is it spitting out?

Air/fuel ratio is set by the computer, determined by input received by the sensors.

Has a bit of a rough start , "sometimes" when i give it gas it will almost back fire, then die or almost die parked and driving. It idles alright sometimes but normally will have a wierd 1200-1500rmp average stuttering. Im getting alot of smoke come out on start and wierd initial idle until put into drive or reverse. When i put it into gear it drops to about 800-900rpm and runs a little smoother. I had Jef come take a look and he thought it might be  the air fuel/timing idea but im pretty sure he is tired of hearing about it ;D Its running a little better now that i have used fuel inection cleaner and stop smoke. I'm just worried about havn trouble with it on the trail.

Could be a lot of things, getting the codes read for free at auto value might help identify a bad sensor or something.


Tune up is good?
Any Vacuum leaks?
Try spraying some carb cleaner around the edges of the intake and Vac hoses,  if you're idle changes with the spray, it's leaking and will cause it to run like garbage.

If it has never run right maybe it has the chip programmed wrong or for another engine,

I found some new oil today when I drove it around the block. When I first bought it the back right spark plug was really loose, there oil now coming from same plug. One of my gaskets is leaking aswell, I'll try out the intake cleaner tonight.

Is the oil coming from the spark plug hole or around it? If it is coming directly from where the spark plug goes in you may have a bit of an issue on your hands.

Could changing the head cover gasket help, that way I can take a look inside at the plug seals aswell?
